North Country Regional Hospital is a 116-bed general acute care hospital. Originally founded in 1898 by a group of Benedictine nuns the hospital has grown into a regional health care facility serving northern Minnesota.

Bemidji is taken from the Ojibwe name Bay-may-ji-ga-maug ("a lake with crossing waters").
