Department ChairOpening Number:1200344Position Title:Department ChairPosition Number:00028637FTE:1.0Salary:Commensurate with experienceBenefits Eligibility:Benefited - includes retirement plan and full coverage for family health insuranceSearch by Group:Executive/AdministrativeDivision:Academic AffairsDepartment:Architecture & Landscape ArchPosition Description:The Department of Architecture and Landscape Architecture at North Dakota State University invites applications and nominations for the full-time, tenured position of Department Chair. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a dynamic vision for the future of our programs, with the potential to transition the Department to a new School of Art and Design. The Department currently offers professional programs in landscape architecture (B. L. A.) and architecture (M. Arch.), and is considering establishing new post-professional design programs. The Department currently enrolls approximately 500 students in its degree programs, housed in two newly renovated buildings 10 minutes away from the main university campus. Ranked among the top 108 public and private universities in the country by the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education, North Dakota State University is distinctive as a student-focused, land-grant, research university, and is an NSF ADVANCE Institution.
The Department is located in downtown Fargo, North Dakota, a city whose extreme climate prepares graduates to address a broad range of environmental conditions. Due largely to the booming oil industry in the western part of the state coupled with substantial investments in the technology and manufacturing sectors, North Dakotas economy is growing swiftly, yet not without significant impacts to the natural and built environments. Consequently, the Department confronts unique opportunities for design education, outreach, and research. While rural North Dakota is characterized by the open prairie, in which isolated buildings dot the landscape, Minnesotas nearby forests and lakes constitute a landscape mythologized by lake cabins. Fargos position along the north-flowing Red River places the city precisely between the prairie to the west and the lakes to the east; Winnipeg to the north and Minneapolis to the southeast are each within four hours drive. With a metropolitan population of over 200,000, Fargo-Moorhead has three universities, a vibrant arts community, a strong public education system, and excellent medical care.Minimum Qualifications:Minimum Qualifications: Candidates must be qualified by education and experience to administer programs in architecture and landscape architecture, with credentials that warrant a tenured appointment at a senior rank. Candidates must possess a professional degree in architecture, landscape architecture, or an allied field, and must show significant commitment to professional development beyond the first professional degree. That commitment might be evidenced by a second Masters degree; professional practice and registration; a Ph. D.; or an exceptional record of professional practice, service involvement, research, or publication. Applicants should also have teaching experience in a university environment, demonstrated capabilities in scholarly and/or creative work, ability to interact and collaborate effectively with others, a commitment to diverse peoples and ideas, and experience in leadership roles. Effective oral and written communication skills.Preferred Qualifications:Preferred qualifications include professional registration, five or more years of experience in practice, leadership roles in national professional organizations, experience with the accreditation process, an exceptional portfolio of creative work, a significant record of high-quality publications, experience in global education, and experience leading strong academic programs.Screening Date:11/06/2012Open Until Filled:YesSearch Type:Internal/External Simultaneously: Open to all applicantsSpecial Instructions to Applicants:To apply, please visit https://jobs.ndsu.edu and complete the online application. Please upload the following documents in PDF format (maximum size of 10MB per PDF):

2.	A complete curriculum vitae.
3.	A portfolio of creative work and/or publications. (attach to Other Document 1)
4.	Names and contact information for five references.
Screening of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. The position will be available July 1, 2013 and may begin at any time following that date. Breeding Program Profile: The NDSU corn breeding program has over 80 years of continuous research and it is known for being the most northern public corn breeding program in North America, moving corn north to cooler seasons and west to drier areas. The goals of the program are to adapt unique corn germplasm, maximize its genetic improvement, develop corn cultivars, and train the next generation of corn breeders. Our program exploits unique environment for corn breeding and acts as a unique genetic provider to foundation seed companies, retailer seed companies, processing industry, and breeders nationally and internationally. Most industry breeding centers developing products for North Dakota and central and northern Minnesota are located in southern Minnesota. In the past 10 years, the NDSU corn breeding program has released 25 unique short-season lines, 8 germplasms, and has identified 5 unique hybrids for commercial production. The products have been adapted to very short seasons, with cold and drought tolerance, fast dry down, and enhanced quality. It is anticipated that the new VPRCA will begin service during the summer of 2013.
NDSU has over the past two decades undergone a dramatic change in terms of the breadth and scope of its scholarly, instructional, and service activities. As one of ND’s two flagship research institutions, NDSU has grown to be the largest university in the state’s 11-campus higher education system, and the only one of which is ranked in the National Science Foundations top-100 research universities in the nation. The university community remains proud of and committed to its initial 1890 land-grand mission related to agriculture and engineering, but embraces a now comprehensive range of academic endeavors in the arts and sciences.
The state of ND currently enjoys one of the best economies in the nation.
