Serves to inform and educate the public of threats of ecologically harmful aquatic invasive species (AIS) to Minnesota's waters. Inspectors work at public water access sites inspecting watercraft for invasive species and educating the public by providing information to watercraft users.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  • Inspect watercraft at public water accesses in Douglas County
  • Provide AIS education and program outreach to recreational boaters, lake-users, lake-property owners and the general public at public water accesses and special events. 
  • Use mobile device to conduct inspections and record survey responses from the general public.  Mobile device also used for communication with supervisory staff.
  • Conduct AIS early detection searches, as assigned
  • Demonstrate reliable attendance, punctuality, and professional behavior.
  • Perform all work in compliance with Douglas County Safety Program, including the AWAIR policy and applicable OSHA standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


Required Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent

 
Required Licenses and Other Requirements: 

  • Possess a valid Minnesota Class D Driver's License or the equivalent and ability to obtain Minnesota Class D Driver's License within 30 days of employment.
  •  

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Qualities

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as a team member
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally both verbally and in writing
  • Willingness to work odd hours and in adverse weather conditions
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office suite of programs and mobile technology, including apps

  
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS


Preferred Education

  • Knowledge of aquatic invasive species
  • College coursework in one of the following disciplines: biological sciences, environmental sciences, environmental education, natural resources, wildlife conservation, or law enforcement

  
Preferred Experience

  • Previous watercraft inspection experience
  • Previous customer service experience and/or working with public
  • Experience working for a governmental entity
  • Experience with data entry on a laptop or tablet computer

 
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Qualities

  • Ability to identify Minnesota's aquatic invasive species
  • Sound understanding of customer relations with an ability to interact positively with a wide range of customers
  • Provide outstanding customer service and project positive image of Douglas County to residents and customers
  • Interest in environmental science, natural resource management, fisheries management, law enforcement, or other closely related fields
  • Working knowledge of various types of watercraft
  • Ability to coordinate multiple tasks within a professional setting
  • Understand and follow supervisor directions, work rules, policies, and procedures

Inspection tablet, cell phone with camera, hand wipes, hand sanitizer, paper towels, inspection mirrors, crescent wrench, flashlights, magnifying glass, pens, smart phone, extension arm, and sponge
Inspection Staff Equipment
Staff identification: shirts, badges, name tags, hats, inspection vest, etc., chairs, and trash bags
Educational Materials
