JOB SUMMARY
Under specific direction, performs technical procedures in support of the Medical Genetics Laboratory in a manner that ensures accurate and reliable clinical results following Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) and College of American Pathologists (CAP) guidelines.
Runs complex pieces of equipment requiring advanced specialized training. Cleans, sterilizes, and maintains equipment and lab area. Utilizes knowledge of scientific clinical laboratory protocols. Comprehends numeric concepts and performs numeric calculations. Participates in the development and revision of standard operating procedures. Ability to work collaboratively with a research and/or clinical group or team.
Possesses a basic or general knowledge of laboratory procedures. Works under close supervision of more senior researchers with some independent judgment. Possesses excellent time management and organizational skills. Possesses excellent communication and interpersonal skills are necessary. Expected to learn computer scripting in the form of on-the-job training and/or learning. Ability and willingness to travel to other laboratory locations as necessary. Cross-trains into Molecular Genetics Division (MGL). Becomes involved with special projects as necessary.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
Strives to complete assignments according to established quality measures. Participates in clinical research activities according to study protocols. Adheres to relevant policies and ethics for clinical laboratory testing. Employs inventory management systems and tools to monitor supply levels. Documents defective equipment and reports it to an appropriate supervisor. Operates genetic diagnostic tools and technologies. Operates and calibrates equipment in a basic laboratory environment. Performs routine disinfection and sterilization activities on medical instruments, devices and equipment. Accurately gauges the impact and cost of errors, omissions, and oversights.
DEPARTMENT DETAILS
Personnel performing high complexity testing must have a minimum of one of the following:
Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution; or
Associate degree in a laboratory science (chemical or biological science) or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution, or equivalent laboratory training and experience meeting the requirements defined in the CLIA regulation 42CFR493.1489 (see NOTE 2); or
Meet other provisions defined in 42CFR493.1489(b)(2)(B)(4) or 42CFR493.1489(b)(2)(B)(5)(i) for personnel performing high complexity testing on or before April 24. 1995 (refer to the CLIA regulations for more details)
For high complexity testing, equivalent laboratory training and experience includes the following:
60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution that, at a minimum, includes either 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, OR 24 semester hours of science courses that include six semester hours of chemistry, six semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination; AND
Laboratory training including either completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES, NAACLS, or other organization approved by HHS (note that this training may be included in the 60 semester hours listed above), OR at least three months documented laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual performs high complexity testing.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in a clinical, health or life sciences field required.
