New Year, New Career: Be the Next Sysco Success Story

Published: Jun 13, 2017

Fourteen years ago, when Toby Kuntz jumped behind the wheel of a freshly loaded semi to make his first deliveries for Sysco, he had no idea his route would one day take him up the corporate ladder. From Delivery Associate to Marketing Associate to his current role as District Sales Manager, Kuntz has become a model for what hard work, motivation and a commitment to superior customer service can get you.

But what’s surprising isn’t Kuntz’s rise to the top. It’s the fact that his story isn’t all that unique for Sysco North Dakota, the local branch of North America’s largest foodservice marketing and distribution company. Pat Rawley, VP of Operations, also worked his way up, starting his career with Sysco on the nightshift in St. Louis over twenty years ago.

With about 160 employees, Sysco North Dakota maintains a hometown business vibe that attracts hard-working, top talent like Kuntz and Rawley. While the Fargo team is committed to serving its local clients, the entire operation is backed by an industry-leading corporation with resources and career opportunities spread throughout the U.S. and Canada (146 locations to be exact). Fargo team members may find themselves traveling to Sysco’s Houston headquarters for training one year, and offered a promotion the next year with a chance to explore an entirely new area of the country.

The Sysco Culture

Though there is that strong, corporate Sysco backbone, Fargo’s local Sysco North Dakota operation feels much more like a hometown business. Everyone greets one another with a smile instead of a cold head nod. Team members grow in their careers together, getting to know one another on a personal level in the same way they’re encouraged to get to know their customers. Everyone has a stake in the success of the customer, the company and their individual careers… an empowering feeling that breeds longevity.

In 2009, Fargo suffered through a brutal winter of heavy snowfall. Before the record-breaking flood hit that spring, Sysco’s warehouse in Fargo collapsed under the weight of numerous snowfalls. As Kuntz proudly recalled, the entire organization pitched in to keep the Sysco North Dakota operation running. “Drivers, warehouse and office staff showed up from all over the United States to ensure we didn’t miss a beat,” Kuntz said. “There are not a lot of companies that could pull that off in a week or month... We did it in two days!” Problem solving through teamwork—that’s the culture of Sysco, both locally and throughout North America. No matter where they are in the chain of command, employees know they can make an impact on the customer experience. No day is the same. No customer is the same. No challenge is the same. But the solution is always collaboration. Being a part of the solution for customers is the reward that keeps people like Kuntz and Rawley working for Sysco and making their mark all the way to the top.

New Year Career Opportunities

Sysco North Dakota has immediate openings for drivers, warehouse associates and sales representatives to serve customers in the local Fargo-Moorhead and surrounding communities. According to Penny Barnett, head of HR, qualified drivers who like the idea of getting to know the customers they serve are especially in demand.

“We are the largest food distributor in the country with great advancement opportunities, top pay and excellent benefits, but finding the right people to make those daily deliveries and be that key point-of- contact with our customers is always tough,” she explained. “Two of the greatest advantages we offer drivers are incentive pay—some drivers make close to $30/hour—and local routes, so our drivers get to be home every night, weather permitting.”

Sysco hires self-motivated team members who enjoy hitting goals and seek out opportunities to improve their area of expertise. And though many positions naturally come with well-defined expectations and goals, there’s a certain amount of creativity that comes with that kind of structure. Every customer has their own unique order that must be picked, loaded and delivered on time. Getting the product from Sysco’s warehouse to the customers’ stockrooms in the most efficient way is a bit like a puzzle, and each team member helps piece it all together.

At Sysco, you can take your career anywhere you want to go, and do so with above average pay and benefits. If you like the feel of a smaller organization, but don’t want to miss out on the opportunities that come with a larger corporation, find the right fit with Sysco and enjoy both.
