RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide technical expertise, leadership, and direction for transmission planning team, acting as staff advisor within and outside the department.
  • Facilitate comprehensive, coordinated, and transparent planning of Minnesota Power’s transmission system in order to provide reliable and economic service to customers while navigating a rapidly evolving utility landscape.
  • Lead and conduct transmission studies to assess and address system needs, devise solutions for evolving electricity production and consumption, modernize aging infrastructure, and integrate cutting-edge technologies.
  • Review and prepare formal planning reports and project scope documentation.
  • Facilitate collaborative development of major transmission projects with a cross-functional team of internal stakeholders to ensure successful and coordinated project outcomes.
  • Coordinate transmission system modifications with external entities (other utilities, customers, regulatory bodies and the general public).
  • Provide ongoing technical support for internal and external stakeholders for project planning, development, and implementation, as well as any required regulatory filings.
  • Research new technology for potential corporate application to support grid modernization, improved reliability, and the integration of renewable resources.

REQUIRED EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Engineering Physics is required.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Eight years or more of related experience in the electric utility industry is required.
  • A master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Engineering Physics may be equivalent for up to one year of related experience.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license is required.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • This position will allow for hybrid work following an initial training period (which shall occur on-site) AND satisfactory execution of job objectives, consistent with ALLETE's alternative work arrangements policy. A hybrid work arrangement means the employee's position will be a blend of work performed both in-person and at an offsite location such as an employee's home office.  This position will report to Duluth, MN.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Demonstrated professional engineering competence and performance at a senior level with related experience in the electric utility industry.
  • Successful candidates will have demonstrated ability to work independently, creatively solve problems, and show strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Requires high level of interpersonal skills to establish and maintain positive and productive working relationships.
  • Travel may be required dependent upon position responsibility.
  • This position may be subject to assessment of skills, job match and/or aptitude.
