Under general supervision, performs user service and advanced clerical support duties to assist in the operation of the library. Performs basic reference, instructional services, and technology assistance/troubleshooting.

Scope of Responsibility :
Responsible for accuracy and quality of own work. Provides work direction to Pages and volunteers.
  1. Provide reference services for library patrons using professional techniques for analyzing questions and searching resources. Determines for clients which sources will most effectively satisfy their informational, educational and business research needs.
    1. Conducts reference interviews and analyzes client needs;
    2. Searches, locates and provides such information and materials using printed and electronic resources;
    3. Retrieves all books, periodicals and other bibliographic materials; returns misplaced or used materials to their proper location;
    4. Provides client referral services for information not available at library;
    5. Compiles and maintains frequently asked or difficult to answer reference questions to expedite responding to subsequent requests for such information;
    6. Implements Inter-library Loan requests and hold requests from patrons.
    7. Promotes library collections through programming, activities, and events.

  2. Instructs library clients (individuals and groups) to properly utilize library resources.
    1. Provides instruction on emerging technology resources (e.g. the Internet), various databases, the online catalog, and other bibliographic resources;
    2. Registers internet users, troubleshoots computer problems;
    3. Resolves routine computer software and hardware problems. Reports non-routine problems and follows up to ensure equipment functionality.
      1. Instructs library clients in the use of downloadable library content and in the devices needed to access such library content; troubleshoots issues with the library's digital services.

  3. Monitors the Library facilities and upholds Library policies and procedures in the absence of management staff.
    1. Assesses problem patrons and potentially dangerous situations; in conjunction with contract security acts within established procedures regarding conduct violations.

  4. Performs ongoing evaluation of the currency and usefulness of library collection and makes recommendations for possible additions to the library collection based upon patron requests and observation of patrons' interests, etc.

  5. Communicates courteously and professionally and maintains working relationships with others in carrying out job functions.
    1. Frequently interacts with others in the work unit, the public, vendors and across departments to exchange detailed and/or technical information where the ability to explain concepts is exercised;
    2. Interaction with the public, vendors or across departments occasionally includes negotiations involving convincing the other party to do something to achieve a basic work-related objective.

  6. Maintains various records relating to work unit activities, etc. and prepares statistical reports regarding such information as required.

  7. Performs all job duties in compliance with safety guidelines and with an ongoing awareness of safety practices.
    1. Knows and follows department and city rules as well as sound work and safety practices in order to accomplish the job objectives and avoid injury or loss;
    2. Wears proper protective equipment when policy requires or conditions indicate a need exists and utilizes proper body mechanics and ergonomics while performing work;
    3. When potentially unsafe conditions are observed makes efforts to avoid or correct them if they are controllable and draws them to the attention of the responsible supervisor or safety representative in a timely manner.

  8. Performs other duties and activities as assigned. When an emergency declaration has been made by the City of Fargo administration, performs duties as required by the Incident Commander for the duration of need. Duties may require work in locations other than standard library locations; work outside of standard library hours of operations; work with physical requirements beyond that of regular library functions, if able.

The job requires an associate's degree in a related field and three or more years of related customer contact experience, including one or more years of public or school library experience with experience in assisting patrons; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above. Bachelor's degree is strongly preferred; some library coursework is preferred.



Knowledge, skills, and abilities include:
  • Knowledge of basic library practices and procedures including alphabetizing and the Dewey Decimal Classification System;
  • Knowledge of reference sources and search strategies;
  • Knowledge of the reference collection including print, electronic, in-house and applicable external resources;
  • Knowledge in the instruction of electronic content and provider platforms utilized by the library and the relevant supported devices;
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Windows as well as software such as web browsers, plugins, PDF readers, and media players;
  • Knowledge of computer peripherals such as printers, monitors, barcode scanners, and self-check workstations;
  • Familiarity with current and emerging social media platforms, including content creation
  • Familiarity with presentation technologies, including microphones, computer projects, and cameras;
  • Knowledge of methods, practices and techniques involved in maintaining the circulation of library materials;
  • Skill in organization and prioritizing work assignments;
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both verbal and written forms, and have strong customer service and public relations skills.
Work ranges from light to medium physical demands. Daily work involves frequent handling, lifting, carrying, and moving of library materials, book return bins, and book carts. The work requires frequent computer use and frequent moving between buildings and rooms. The job may involve dealing with and members of the public who are emotionally charged over an issue. There is regular attention to detail.
Activities include stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, digital dexterity, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing/listening, seeing/observing, repetitive motions.

Light Work: Physical demands are normally those associated with light work: Exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally and/or 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; but at times the demands are associated with medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 pounds of force frequently or constantly.
