Under general supervision this position performs general routine maintenance at various City buildings and grounds including cleaning and maintenance of Landfill grounds and recycling drop sites, assisting at the Household Hazardous Waste Facility (HHW) and landscape care at various locations. Tasks performed may vary depending on assignment. Provides guidance and direction to temporary laborers.

Scope of Responsibility :
Responsible for the quality and accuracy of his/her own work. Responsible for the care and safe operation of a variety of equipment with high monetary value.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities :
  1. Ensures buildings, grounds and equipment are operational and safe for daily functions.
    1. Performs walk-through inspections for buildings and grounds assigned; visually inspects areas for cleanliness and identifies problems in need of repair.
    2. Reports problems to supervisor.
    3. Identifies safety concerns and recommends actions to deter vandalism and other damage.
  2. Maintain facility grounds
    1. Operate both riding and push mowers, as well as weed trimmers to maintain turf;
      1. Inspect equipment on a daily basis prior to operation to ensure proper fuel levels, tire pressure, and overall condition are conducive to safe operation; reports broken parts and malfunctioning equipment to supervisor as needed.
    2. Drive light truck and trailer loaded with equipment to remote sites.
    3. Performs grounds keeping duties such as snow removal, debris/trash pickup, raking leaves, replace mulching, light pruning, trimming, and water.
    4. Pull/spray weeds.
  3. Assist at HHW
    1. Greet customers, assist with unloading of items for drop-off.
    2. Determine if items can be recycled or reused.
    3. Place or package items following HHW guidelines.
  4. Assist with maintenance of recycling drop sites.
    1. Painting;
    2. Collect misc. items;
    3. Assist in general maintenance and cleaning.
    4. Prepares containers for delivery.
  5. Communicates courteously and professionally and maintains working relationships with others in carrying out job functions.
    1. Interacts regularly with others in the work unit, the public, vendors or across departments to provide information relating to work assignments and progress of work or to convey information about conditions or work-related needs.
    2. Occasionally interacts with others to exchange detailed and/or technical information where the ability to explain concepts is exercised.
  6. Performs all job duties in compliance with safety guidelines and with an ongoing awareness of safety practices.
    1. Knows and follows department and city rules as well as sound work and safety practices in order to accomplish the job objectives and avoid injury or loss.
    2. Wears proper protective equipment when policy requires or conditions indicate a need exists and utilizes proper body mechanics and ergonomics while performing work.
    3. When potentially unsafe conditions are observed makes efforts to avoid or correct them if they are controllable and draws them to the attention of the responsible supervisor or safety representative in a timely manner.
  7. Performs other duties and activities as assigned.

The job requires a high school degree or GED and one year of experience performing building and/or cleaning maintenance and repair work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above. A valid driver's license is required.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities include:
  • Knowledge of minor equipment maintenance;
  • Knowledge of basic cleaning/maintenance methods and practices and proper chemical handling;
  • Skill in operating a variety of hand and power tools;
  • Manual skill in performing cleaning and maintenance functions;
  • Skill in communication, interpersonal skills and customer service skills;
  • Ability to read work orders, instructions, and labels.
Physical Demands & Working Conditions :
Work is performed in a variety of indoor and outdoor settings - weather permitting. Work is generally heavy with considerable variety. Daily work involves moving, pushing and/or lifting objects weighing over 100 and regular driving to locations within the City. Regular operation of equipment such as lawn mowers/trimmers, snow-thrower, and various manual and power hand tools is required. There is moderate attention to details. Working conditions may have exposure to injury, trauma, angry individuals, some chemicals, dirt, fumes, dust, insects, oil, loud noise, adverse road and weather conditions. Work is often in or near streets and power lines. Incumbent spends a part of each day in a City truck.

Incumbents must be able to walk on uneven surfaces, operate equipment (mowers/trimmers) for extended periods, and occasionally lift, push, or pull, up to 100 pounds. Frequently lift, push or pull up to 50 pounds, and regularly move objects up to 20 pounds. Strong attention to detail is required.

Activities include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, digital dexterity, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing/listening, seeing/observing, repetitive motions.

Heavy Work: Physical demands are normally those associated with heavy work: Exerting up to of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in up to of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force regularly or constantly to move objects.
