Education: Completion of an accredited Interpreter Training Program or related Associates Degree is required. Experience performing the duties of the job may substitute for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Qualifications: RID Certification or other nationally recognized Certification.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:

  1. Provide sign language interpreter services for deaf/hard of hearing students.
  2. Provide interpreting for school functions outside the classroom, during regularly scheduled school hours.
  3. Serve as a liaison to promote good public relations between students who are deaf/hard of hearing, and their peers, staff, faculty members, and parents.
  4. Participate as a part of the instructional team to provide continuity of instruction for students as identified in their individual education plan or as assigned by the teacher of the deaf/hard of hearing.
  5. Confer with general education classroom teachers and teacher of the deaf/hard of hearing in order to better prepare for interpreting services.
  6. Assist with the collection and correlation of materials used in both the general education and the deaf/hard of hearing classroom work.
  7. Exhibit an interest for self-improvement in signing ability, interpreting skills and establishing a better understanding of the educational process.
  8. Attend in-service programs to improve skills necessary to deal with students in the deaf/hard of hearing program.
  9. Assist in maintaining hearing-related equipment used in the classroom.
  10. Must be able to drive between schools to serve students.
  11. Other related duties as assigned.


Work Environment and Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; occasionally walk and stand. The ability to hear and see in order to communicate effectively as well as communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; Maintain effective audio/visual discrimination and perception to the degree necessary for the successful performance of assigned duties; Maintain mental capacity, allowing for effective interaction and communication with others. Occasionally may need to lift up to fifty (50); reaching, standing, walking, carrying, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, sitting, and/or crawling within the classroom.
