The Food Technologist conducts laboratory analyses on northern grown crops, assists with pilot-scale processing, and participates in demonstrations and training for international trade teams and short course participants. This includes lab analysis of grains, flour, and ingredients. This is a non-tenured track and non-research position. Candidate will work with industry clients in confidential manner. Analyze northern grown crops and their processed products for quality and functionality, under the guidance of the NCI Technical Manager. Conduct laboratory analyses (e.g., moisture, protein, oil, ash, HPLC, Farinograph, NIR, RVA, etc.) on grains, oilseeds, pulse crops and processed products. Conduct annual crop quality surveys, collect and report data as needed with data files and written reports to clients and NCI staff, must have effective communication with clients and NCI staff. Assist in the sourcing and collecting of commodity samples (e.g., regional commodity groups, universities and extension centers).

Assist with pilot-scale processing for northern grown crops under the guidance of NCI Project Processing Managers or Food Scientists. Assist with pilot-scale processing and product development projects (baking, pasta processing, extrusion, milling and other processing applications) conducted at NCI. Assist with collection and packaging of test samples for shipping and assist with laboratory demonstrations and training for trade teams and short course participants.

Properly clean and maintain laboratory work areas. Keep laboratory work areas clean and maintained. Assist with Food Safety SOPs and appropriate recordkeeping, perform light maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment. Perform routine inspections on designated equipment and identify and communicate other cleaning and maintenance needs with NCI Technical Manager.

Work Schedule: 40 hours per week

Advertised Salary: Commensurate with experience

Minimum Qualifications:
  • B. S. in Food Science, Plant Science, Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, or related ag degree, or 1-2 years or more of lab work experience
  • Wet chemistry or analytical chemistry work experience
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Lab experience in the area of food, or agriculture science
