Description:
The purpose of the Lead Academic Advisor is to serve in a leadership role in academic advising and student success. This position will advise a caseload of students, supervise a group of academic advisors within a college, and serve as a connecting point between the academic advisors, colleges, and the Career and Advising Center. This position will serve alongside a group of other lead advisors that are responsible for supporting the NDSU mission, vision and values through developmental, proactive academic advising and equity-based student success and retention initiatives.

Description:
The purpose of the Lead Academic Advisor is to serve in a leadership role in academic advising and student success. This position will serve alongside a group of other lead advisors that are responsible for supporting the NDSU mission, vision and values through developmental, proactive academic advising and equity-based student success and retention initiatives.
Details:
- Provide leadership and supervision to a group of professional academic advisors (typically 4-5 direct professional staff) within advising unit.
- Ensure advising staff is trained on developmental advising, student caseload management, and various advising systems and initiatives used throughout the year.
- Coordinate and lead advisor team meetings encouraging advising best practices for discussion and exploration, communicating critical dates and information with team.
- Regularly meet 1:1 with direct reports.
- Encourage professional development (PD) of advisors and manages PD funding.
- Maintain updated knowledge of all programs and curricular requirements for every program represented on their team.
- Serve as liaison between academic college leadership (deans, associate & assistant deans, chairs, and directors) and academic advising unit.
- Serve as trouble shooting contact within unit for university advising systems and complex advising issues.
- Responsible for assessment needs of areas of advising including surveying, reporting, and utilization and dissemination of results.
- Report on advising trends and specified metrics to associate director of advising and relevant department and college contacts.
- Provide academic advising services based on the NACADA Core Competencies guiding framework.
- Advise approximately 150 students utilizing developmental, proactive, caseload management advising including summer orientation registration.
- Utilize student success platform analytics to implement proactive outreach through a variety of strategies to assist students with academic difficulty.
- Refer students as needed to other student support services (financial aid, counseling, center for writers, etc.).
- Utilizing the NDSU co-curricular model, help students identify and understand opportunities to maximize their student experience at NDSU to positively impact their communities.
- Develop and implement innovative advising techniques to support connection with major department, career exploration, student academic success and retention.
- Discuss career goals, outcomes, and resources with students utilizing Handshake, FOCUS2, and other available resources.
- Meet with students interested in changing majors.
- Work collectively with other lead advisors and supervisor to develop and implement ongoing training and professional development to campus (professional, faculty, and support) academic advisors.
- Participate in ongoing training for accurate information on innovative and effective advising and career development techniques.
- Attend and support all staff meetings and events as required within the Career and Advising Center.
- Maintain regular involvement with faculty, administrators, and related campus offices (Registration & Records, Student Success Programs, etc.) for academic curriculum, policy/procedure and other pertinent updates.
- Academic Year Hours: Monday-Friday: 8am-5pm
- Summer and Break Hours: Monday-Friday: 7:30am-4pm
- Occasional evening and weekend hours throughout the year

Minimum Qualifications:
- Master's Degree
- 3 years of professional experience in a higher education role
- Supervisory experience or demonstrated evidence of growth in responsibility
- Demonstrated leadership within a team environment
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Evidence of commitment to creating inclusive spaces
- Current knowledge of student development and counseling theory
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Exceptional organizational skills, detail oriented, problem-solver and ability to handle conflict situations
- Professional experience directly in academic advising
- 2+ years of supervisory experience
- Advanced experience and knowledge of student advising issues and university/college policies and procedures
