Position: NDSU Dickinson Research Extension Center Summer Horticulture Internship

Salary: $15/hour (Full Time) plus housing

Start Date: May 15 th - May 20 th (Some flexibility based on student schedule)

The NDSU Dickinson Research Extension Center (DREC), located in Dickinson, ND is offering one paid student internship for the summer of 2025 for a student studying and/or has an interest in horticulture. The DREC, established in 1905, is a research location representative of the Missouri Plateau region. The Center's research and extension programs consist of agronomy, livestock, integrated crop and livestock systems, rangeland and horticulture.

The 2025 internship program will run from May 1 st to August 20 th with flexible start/end dates depending on student's schedule and opportunities to work in the fall of 2025. The student completing this internship will be supported if they wish to use the experience for college credits toward their degree requirements. Housing during the internship is available if needed. The intern will work with the Center's summer grounds crew and master gardener volunteers. The DREC has a 40-acre area that is open to the public with more than 100 tree species, pollinator garden and 45 plus species of native flowers, grasses and more.

The hired intern will be exposed to and assist with garden, tree and lawn care and will be allocated a budget to develop the horticulture area. The intern will care for established plants and establish new plants where needed and will also support research collection and outreach. They will assist with the day-to-day needs in the horticulture area. Every effort will be made to ensure the intern learns new areas of horticulture and develop their career interests that are available at the DREC.

Applicant required qualifications:
  • Perform needed care of plants through manual labor
  • Operate lawn mowers, small tractors and other farm implements, UTV and other machinery
  • Be outside for long periods of time
  • Work with technology to develop horticulture outreach materials
  • Execute all tasks safely
  • Work both independently and as a team member
  • Have a valid driver's license
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Complete background check
Regular work schedule is Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with the possibility of some weekend work. The intern will be required to check in/out each day using the NDSU HCM employee self-service timeclock portal.
