Senior Research Economist and Program Leader (10-month, non-tenure track)

The Agricultural Risk Policy Center (ARPC) at North Dakota State University invites applications for a non-tenure track position as Senior Research Economist and Program Leader at the rank of Research Assistant/Associate Professor with an expected start date of March 16, 2025, or as negotiated. This appointment offers an exciting opportunity to lead research initiatives focused on developing a predictive model to assess the impacts of agricultural risk management policy proposals.

The successful candidate will engage in high-level research activities, such as developing a foundational policy evaluation model based on farm-level RMA data, conducting empirical analysis of crop insurance participation and subsidy rates, and producing policy reports on crop insurance data and risk management for the Upper Midwest. Additionally, the role includes helping establish institutional partnerships for livestock risk management and dairy insurance programs.

This position also involves mentoring junior researchers, contributing to publications, and collaborating with interdisciplinary teams. The candidate will report directly to the ARPC Director and play a key role in shaping the future of agricultural policy research at the Center. Salary is highly competitive and commensurate with experience.

Minimum Qualifications:

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in agricultural economics, applied economics, or a related field. The successful candidate should demonstrate expertise in developing and applying econometric models for policy evaluation, particularly in agricultural risk management. Experience with farm-level data analysis, especially RMA data, and conducting empirical analysis of crop insurance participation and subsidy rates is essential. The candidate must also have excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to present complex research findings to policymakers, stakeholders, and academic peers. The successful candidate must also demonstrate a proven ability to collaborate with interdisciplinary teams and work successfully in diverse environments.

Preferred Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have a strong record of peer-reviewed publications in agricultural risk management or related fields. Success in securing external funding for research projects is highly desirable. Candidates with experience in using statistical and econometric methods and advanced data analysis tools, including machine learning techniques, applied to policy evaluation will be preferred. Familiarity with U.S. agricultural policy and experience engaging with agricultural stakeholders, particularly in crop and livestock risk management, are essential. The successful candidate should also demonstrate the ability to translate research findings into actionable policy insights.
