Job Description:

Primary Accountabilities
Financial and Management Reporting and Consulting (45%)

o Reviews and approves ledger adjustments and postings to permit full accrual basis trial balances (e.g.GAAP and statutory adjustments, eliminations for intercompany transactions, consolidation, etc.).
o Ensures timeliness and accuracy of all financial statements and management reports through high-level financial analysis and coordination with transaction processing units to ensure complete and timely cut-off of processing systems and postings.
o Identifies and implements continuous improvements, including technology and automation efforts, as they relate to accounting processes.
o Coordinates and reviews quarterly and annual reporting and footnote disclosures.
o Coordinates and reviews specialized management reports based on actual results for Enterprise leadership.
o Identifies new and unusual items prior to the start of the close cycle so they can be evaluated and properly accounted for and reported in the correct period.
o Leads, develops, maintains, updates and implements accounting policies and procedures in accordance with GAAP and statutory accounting principles, and ensures proper policy documentation and retention.
o Develops working relationships cross-divisionally and with business partners and operating company leadership. Cultivates business partners' trust on financial matters. Uses these relationships to identify business partner needs for financial expertise or reports.
o Proactively identifies the need for additional reports to support management decisions. Researches, designs and develops these reports.
o Assists internal and external audit staffs with their annual financial audits, and with audits of specific systems or operations.
o Coordinates, supervises and reviews the preparation of schedules, exhibits and footnotes in the Annual Statement (A/S).
o Coordinates, supervises and reviews preparation of schedules, exhibits and footnotes in the quarterly statutory reports.
Technical Expertise (25%)
o Applies understanding of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners' (NAIC) Accounting Procedures and Practices manual. Keeps up-to-date on changing accounting rules and interpretations as directed by the NAIC.
o Develops extensive knowledge of statutory and GAAP accounting principles.
o Researches complex statutory and GAAP accounting issues and applies those principles to new and unusual transactions.
o Monitors and understands current industry accounting and reporting practices that may impact the company and implements best practices.
o Keeps current on professional designations through efforts in continuing education. Stays abreast of industry developments by reading accounting-related literature and attending seminars and conferences.
o Develops relationships with peers within industry groups to leverage information for new and unusual transaction processing.
o Interprets insurance accounting regulatory requirements as promulgated by the states.
Internal Controls and Risk Assessment Analysis (5%)
o Oversees procedures for key responsibilities to support internal controls over financial reporting and annually reviews and updates these procedures accordingly.
o Completes internal controls risk assessment and documentation for financial reporting processes that may impact multiple complimentary controls or are integrated with or interdependent on other processes.
o Facilitates the development of test plans for compound and complimentary internal controls in accordance with insurance regulations and corporate standards. Monitors the execution of test plans and development of process improvements where needed.
o Documents and monitors implementation of process improvements and retesting when needed. Communicates the results of internal risk control assessments and process and system testing to department management and divisional leadership.
Team Lead/Project Management (25%)
o Supports management's vision and implements new policies and procedures in a positive manner.
o Proactively identifies and leads process improvement department initiatives.
o Represents the Controller Division and Accounting Department in presentations of analyses to executive and divisional leadership.
o Manages projects of varying complexity, including cross divisional teams, and/or multiple concurrent projects with complex resource interdependencies, with ultimate responsibility for successful project delivery.
o Drives collaboration in cross divisional project teams, establish project scope, develop project plans, determine member accountabilities, and establishes milestones and stoplight reporting as required to assure the project completion.
o Reports project team efforts to the stakeholders and assures consistent communication continues among the project team and their sponsors.
o Represents division on corporate and enterprise-wide committees and projects. Often serves as project leader. Contributes accounting and financial expertise and reports back to management on committee decisions or project progress.
o Provides job specific training and feedback to help build better team members and serves as a mentor to staff.
