Job Details

The Forum is looking for a journalist to cover sports and breaking news on nights and weekends in Fargo, ND, as part of the Public Information Team. The Public Information Team produces print and digital content for the sports, news and business sections of The Forum, as well as the West Fargo Pioneer.

This reporter will work with a talented team producing several sports game briefs nightly on deadline, while focusing on accuracy and AP style. The team produces daily news briefs and covers some breaking news.

On weekends, this reporter will assist with managing the print lineup and communicating any story changes or additions to page designers and newsroom team members. This reporter also serves as the weekend reporter for news, covering assignments and breaking news events. Other Responsibilities include:
  • Process game results from coaches and others and compile scoreboard agate for sports pages.
  • Write news and sports briefs on deadline, adding multimedia components when available.
  • Work evenings in fast-paced, high-pressure, deadline-driven environment.
  • File multiple sports briefs nightly using a digital content management system.
  • Cover breaking news on weekends as well as public information items during weekdays.
  • Monitor police and fire scanner, making notes of emergency calls and working with editors or other reporters regarding coverage.
  • Write short-form content as well as longer stories or other audience-appropriate content.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Position Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, mass communication or a related field preferred.
  • AP style experience required.
  • High attention to detail, including name spellings and scores/statistics reporting.
  • Shows initiative and can work independently.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to listen, interview and take accurate notes and write accurate, clear and concise stories.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Computer skills in word processing and content management systems.
  • Knowledge of AP Style, Freedom of Information Act and libel laws.
  • Knowledge of video and camera equipment and ability to edit photos.
  • Ability to be flexible and work under pressure and deadlines.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and a driving record that is insurable by the company.
  • Must carry an acceptable level of vehicle insurance as required by the company.
