Job Summary

The optometric assistant will assist in the flow of patients in and out of the Eye Department. This will include pre and post visit eye testing as requested by the providers, as well as rooming patients and taking vitals. The optometric assistant will become proficient in using the eye testing equipment as well as maintaining supplies throughout the department. They will work directly with the nursing staff and providers to keep the patient flow moving so that patients are cared for in a positive and efficient manner.
Essential Job Functions
Contributes to the assessment of the health status of patients, including interactions with patient's family members by collecting basic subjective and objective data from observations and interviews, including taking vital signs and reporting and recording appropriately.

Answers telephone, routes calls and takes accurate and complete phone messages for the provider and relays information in a prompt manner.

Demonstrates competency and ability to carry out department specific functions in accordance to the department's standards of care, policies and procedures. Performs other duties as assigned to meet the needs of the department/organization.

Prepares rooms and patients for exams and assists with procedures, per provider request. Demonstrates knowledge of location, set-up and use of equipment used for assigned area.

Reports the patient's self-report/symptoms of pain promptly according to standard operating procedure.
  • Demonstrates understanding and follows infection control policies and procedures according to standard operating procedure.
  • Maintains requirements for age specific competencies for the position and demonstrates the knowledge or principles of growth and developments and the skills necessary to provide patient/customer care/services.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of and compliance with:
    • All pertinent safety, health and environmental policies, procedures and guidelines.
    • Working safely, without causing harm or risk to self, others or property.
    • The work environment safety procedures and prompt reporting of unsafe practices, procedures, accidents, injuries or other safety violations to the Leader.
    • The use of all safety equipment and personal protective equipment.
