Job Specifications

This important role manages the corporate insurance program. Establishes, maintains and monitors compliance of insurance and risk management procedures. Prepares loss analyses and budgets, identifies exposures and recommends solutions including cost saving measures and alternative risk transfer concepts. Assists in the identification of insurable and uninsurable business risks and in the development, implementation and administration of insurance coverage or other risk transfer mechanisms to protect the organization. Must have knowledge of all types of insurance coverage including workers' compensation, automobile, general liability, property, surety, captive, and financial policies. Must be able to analyze contracts and identify compliance with insurance requirements as well as assumption of liability clauses. Interacts with insurance company underwriters, brokers, claims personnel, customers, employees, and other parties.

SALARY RANGE: $82,100 - $114,110 (Base salary is determined by the knowledge, skills and abilities of the applicant.)

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Associate General Counsel

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Manages the corporate insurance program.
  • Identifies risks and ensures coverage adequacy; classifies risks and measures potential financial impact on Company Drafts and presents information on the insurance program and risk levels to senior management and the board of directors annually and upon request.
  • Compiles and analyzes underwriting data, summarizes asset and loss information from all properties and divisions prior to renewals.
  • Develops renewal strategies with brokers or others, negotiates with insurers.
  • Reviews policies and premiums for accuracy, coordinates payment of premium; assists in allocation of premiums.
  • Develops specifications, coordinates marketing efforts, and participates in negotiating policy language.
  • Maintains policy files, premium and loss history, policy lists and other records.
  • Reviews and maintains engineering inspections and other risk assessments.
  • Manages the efficacy of the insurance programs, financial solvency of underwriters and provides guidance to management on developing, implementing and revising insurance policies and programs.
  • Prepares and distributes insurance summaries, schedules, reports, and other verbal or written materials to assist management and others in understanding of insurance policies, practices and procedures.
  • Prepares annual Insurance budget.
  • Notifies carriers of circumstances and claims.
  • Assists in preparing summary of potential claims to insurers on a quarterly basis.
  • Performs contract review and analysis. Recommends acceptable contract language, monitors for assumption of risk, acceptability of insurance requirements, indemnification and hold harmless clauses or other areas that provide liability.
  • Produces reports and analyses from the RMIS system as necessary.
  • Produces certificates of insurance as requested.
  • Manages and maintains the corporate bond portfolio.
  • Manages the annual actuarial study process for the workers compensation accrual and communicates results to managers and others.
  • Manages compliance with internal controls as defined within Sarbanes-Oxley documentation for Insurance.
  • Prepares journal entries as necessary.
  • Develops employee development and performance management plans for direct reports.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides training and education to supervisors and employees to assist in their understanding of insurance coverage, risk assessments, claims procedures and risk management policies.
  • Monitors and coordinates the activities of brokers or other service providers.
  • Assists in investigation and handling of specific claims, as well as provides backup for Claims Manager.
  • Supports insurance and claims activities for evolving Health/Safety/Wellness initiatives.
  • Supports merger and acquisition activities.
  • Supports rate review activities.
  • Leads and manages special projects as assigned by the Deputy General Counsel.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:

  • Builds, maintains and manages relationships with department personnel, field personnel, division managers, counsel, underwriters, brokers, actuaries, and others.
  • Interacts with Safety Department, Human Resources, Operational supervisors, Legal, Accounting and management.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 7 or more years of experience in claims management, underwriting, risk management and/or loss control within the insurance industry or a related field is required.
  • Bachelor's degree in finance, business, risk management, compliance or an equivalent of education and experience.
  • Risk Management certification desired.

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Current knowledge of insurance and alternative risk transfer procedures.
  • Experience working with RMIS systems.
  • Basic economic and accounting principles.
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.
  • Knowledge of laws, insurance and risk management processes required.
  • Knowledge of claims handling procedures.
  • Knowledge of safety and loss prevention practices desirable.
