Job Details

The Duluth News Tribune is hiring a full-time Managing Editor who will be responsible for day to day activities and supervision of the daily newspaper's newsroom for multiple platforms.

Responsibilities include:
  • Assist editors/executive editor in setting direction for the newsroom. Makes decisions on selecting material for publication and which events will be covered.
  • Directs the activities of the daily newspaper's newsroom.
  • Supervises employees, establishes schedules and conducts performance reviews, interviews, hires and trains subordinates.
  • Work with the editor/executive editor to plan stories and ensure deadlines are met.
  • Leads and helps execute enterprise and investigative reporting projects.
  • Edits complex stories and improves reporting and writing through draft versions.
  • Interacts with the public.
  • Generates stories and visual ideas.
  • Pursues strong working relationships with others within and outside the company.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Position Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, mass communications or related field.
  • Newsroom and editing experience prefered.
  • Five years experience in a newsroom setting or equivalent combination.
  • Knowledge of human resource/supervisory rules and policies.
  • Knowledge of AP style, the Freedom of Information Act and libel laws.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills to include computers.
  • Ability to be flexible and work under pressure and deadlines.
  • Ability to effectively present information to employees, management and/or groups.
  • Ability to promote teamwork and interdepartmental cooperation.
  • Ability to motivate others.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and a driving record that is insurable by the company.
  • Must carry an acceptable level of vehicle insurance as required by the company.
  • Must be able to work days, nights, and /or holidays.

The Duluth Tribune was founded in 1870, the Duluth Evening Herald in 1883. In 1892 the Tribune merged with the Duluth News as the News-Tribune. In 1929, the Duluth Herald purchased the News-Tribune. In 1936, Ridder Publications purchased the papers. In 1982, the evening Duluth Herald was merged with the morning News-Tribune, becoming the News-Tribune & Herald. In 1988, Herald was dropped from the nameplate; in 2000, the hyphen was dropped. In 2004, the Duluth News Tribune purchased the Superior Daily Telegram as well as three weekly-publication newspapers including the Duluth Budgeteer News, Cloquet Pine Journal and Lake County News Chronicle and three zones of Manney’s Shoppers in the Superior, Cloquet and Two Harbors areas.

 

Located two-and-a-half hours north of the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, Duluth lies on the shore of Lake Superior, the largest freshwater lake in the world (by surface area). Duluth is the midpoint between the Twin Cities and the Canadian border.
