Job Details

The West Central Tribune is seeking a full-time reporter with digital skills to help build our audience with outstanding journalism and great interaction with our readership. This position will be responsible for generating news content for digital-first and print platforms under daily deadlines to serve all readers. Responsible for producing video, developing and contributing to broader reporting projects, utilizing social media sites and contributing to multimedia content. This position will be located in the newsroom of the West Central Tribune, a member of Forum Communications Co..

Responsibilities include:
  • Research, report and write compelling journalism to grow all audience platforms by informing and engaging readers.
  • Receives assignments and develops own ideas into relevant news and information content.
  • Covers breaking news with urgency and accuracy with the goal of digital first, including multimedia segments.
  • Follows prescribed editorial style and format standards, for multiple platforms.
  • Comfort and fluency with digital tools, from audio to video.
  • Collaborates with the editor and design teams to to present content in best presentation to all readers.
  • Contributes to relevant social media accounts.
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned.


Position Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, mass communication or a related field.
  • Professional experience writing, AP style preferred.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and a driving record that is insurable by the company.
  • Must carry an acceptable level of vehicle insurance as required by the company.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to listen, interview and take accurate notes and write accurate, clear and concise stories on deadline and under pressure in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Detail oriented with strong organizational skills with the ability to multitask.
  • Competency in word processing and content management systems.
  • Knowledge of Freedom of Information Act, Open Meeting Law and libel laws.
  • Follow best practices and ethics of responsible journalism.

The West Central Tribune is a daily newspaper with a circulation of 8,500 serving Willmar and the surrounding seven-county area in west-central Minnesota.  The Tribune has been your local news source for more than 125 years.
