JOB SUMMARY

Plans and assists in the delivery of developmentally appropriate play activities, expressive arts, and special events for pediatric patients and their families within the health care setting, both at the bedside and in playroom settings.
Schedules, organizes, and facilitates special events that engage a variety of ages, interests, and abilities. Serves as an advocate for the child when collaborating with the healthcare team. Utilizes knowledge of basic child development, family systems and the developmental effects of stress and trauma on children to establish appropriate interventions to alleviate distress. Promotes family-centered care and facilitates the strengthening of positive coping and resiliency skills within the healthcare setting. Provides ongoing assessment of interventions used. Effectively orients, trains, and supervises volunteers. Possesses basic knowledge of medical diagnosis and procedures. Understands special needs of children with chronic or disabling conditions, the use of play activities in a health care environment along with some familiarity with the body of research regarding children in health care settings.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Delegates tasks to the right people in managing a program or a group of people. Coordinates the delivery of training sessions and their associated activities. Schedules events, programs and activities as well as the work of others. Documents patient status and progress. Organize and store toys and materials to ensure order in activity areas. Communicate with children's parents or guardians about daily activities, behaviors, and related issues. Maintain a safe play environment. Organize and lead activities designed to promote physical, mental, and social development, such as games, arts and crafts, music, storytelling, and field trips.;Observe and monitor children's play activities. Sanitize toys and play equipment.

QUALIFICATIONS

Two years post-secondary education with emphasis on Child Development or related field required.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within six months of hire.
