Summary

This position is located at the VA Black Hills Health Care System (VABHHCS) Nutrition and Food Services at the Fort Meade Campus, South Dakota. This position serves as the first -line supervisor for the Hospital Food Service and works under the direct supervision of the Food Service Foreman WS 05 (Hot Springs); or under the direct supervision of the Supervisory Dietitian (Fort Meade) and the overall supervision of the Chief, Nutrition and Food Services.

Major duties and responsibilities include (but are not limited to)
  • Provides direct supervision to WG-3 and WG-2 food service employees; Provides input to Cook Foreman and supervisory Dietitian in regard to employee scheduling; Follows menu and making menu substitutions as required; Conducts counseling for food service employees; Directs all Food Service activities to include schedules, workload, and menus; Maintains accurate receipt, storage, rotation and distribution of subsistence and supplies; Provides supervision to maintain high level of sanitation in all Nutrition and Food Services work areas;
  • Work Schedule: Rotating schedule including nights, weekends, holidays 5:00 am - 1:30 p.m. or 10:30 am - 7:00 pm.

    PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: The Food Service Supervisor performs work requiring light to moderate physical effort; continuous standing and walking; frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, bending; frequently lifts or moves objects up to 40 pounds; and may be required to perform heavy work such as pushing heavy carts and trucks in unloading and storing supplies.

    Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications. For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Your knowledge, skills and abilities will be compared to the knowledge, skills and abilities (called job elements) needed for success. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1). Applicants who appear to meet the screen out element are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated from consideration.     Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service.
