Hiring Department:    Northern Plains UAS Test Site

Minimum Salary/Position Classification: $65,000+, 12-Month, Full-time, Benefited, Exempt

Work Schedule: 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday

The Chief Pilot leads the safe execution of Northern Plains UAS Test Site (NPUASTS) flight operations by internal flight crews. The Chief Pilot ensures aircraft are airworthy, crew members are highly trained, and operations comply with all applicable policies and regulations. The Chief Pilot position reports directly to the Director of Operations and supervises a team including the Assistant Chief Pilot and UAS Operations Support personnel.


Flight Operation Readiness:
 

  • Coordinate with the Director of Operations to schedule flight test activities meeting project goals.
  • Ensure flight crews and team understand flight test objectives and requirements.
  • Work with Operations Manager, Director of Operations, and research personnel to conduct Flight Test Operational Safety Review activities such as:
    1. Aircraft airworthiness and configuration,
    2. Crew member training,
    3. Policy and regulatory compliance,
    4. Supporting equipment preparation,
    5. Test Plan and Test Card development.


Flight Execution:
 

  • Coordinate schedules and logistics to ensure flight operations are conducted safely and on time.
  • Ensure flight activities are conducted in accordance with test objectives and project requirements.
  • Ensure data collection is conducted in a timely and accurate fashion and in accordance with data reporting requirements.
  • Operate NPUASTS aircraft as required.
  • Fulfill crew member roles as required.


Flight Operations Subject Matter Expertise/Additional Responsibilities:
 

  • Develop and maintain operation documents including:
    1. Crew member training including Moodle courses,
    2. Aircraft airworthiness processes,
    3. General Operating Manual,
    4. Configuration control plans.
  • Stay up to date on FAA UAS guidance.
  • Stay up to date on industry standards and other industry best practices.
  • Incorporate operational best practices, lessons learned, and FAA and industry standards into NPUASTS operations and policies.
  • Be available as a resource to Test Site personnel for flight related questions.
  • Conduct data reporting activities in compliance with data reporting requirements Support technical writing on documents including, but not limited to:
    1. Concept of Operations,
    2. Risk Assessments,
    3. Test Cards,
    4. Project reports.
    Support potential client calls via email and teleconferences, as required. Support local, regional and state meetings and conferences, as required. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:
 

  • Undergraduate Degree.
  • Remote Pilot in Command (RPIC) License and/or manned aircraft license.
  • 3 years of UAS operations experience.
  • 1 year of supervisory experience.
  • Experience managing operations under FAA waivers.
  • Experience developing UAS training curriculums. 
  • Experience developing UAS maintenance programs.
  • Experience developing UAS operations manuals and Standard Operating Procedures. 
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office 365 applications
  • Valid Drivers License.
  • Successful completion of criminal history background check.

This position requires compliance with U.S. government export control laws and regulations. Preferred Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree in an aviation related field.
  • 2 years of supervisory experience.
  • 5+ years of UAS experience.
  • 100 hours of UAS flight experience. NPUASTS operational experience. Certified Flight Instructor. 
  • Experience building or configuring UAS, including Pixhawk and Ardupilot.
