Overview:

This position provides leadership and direction to Securian Financial's living benefit claim operations. It is a senior level position within our enterprise Benefit Distribution Center. It is a dynamic opportunity and critical role as we position ourselves to best serve our customers, manage risk, drive efficiency and support our associates. This role will report directly to the Head of the Benefit Distribution Center.


What you would do in this job:


  1. Leads and provide oversight of all US living benefit claim operations spanning a wide variety of Group products and Individual Life products.
  2. Responsible for effective team leadership including motivating, coaching, change management and other leadership competencies.
  3. Provides effective operational risk management ensuring claim handling is in compliance with applicable state and federal regulations.
  4. Accountable for claim decisions; participates in litigation process including depositions, trials and acting as designated corporate representative.
  5. Liaise with Head of Benefit Distribution Center (BDC) to prioritize initiatives/projects to advance applicable strategic plans.
  6. Maintains strong customer experience and operational metrics through leadership, innovation and process efficiencies.
  7. Maintains in depth understanding of customer and channel partner needs, market trends and solutions.
  8. Principal liaison on major initiatives or opportunities (sales, projects, product and system development, etc.).

  1. Proven leadership experience (both project and people leadership) to effectively motivate and coach associates and other leaders of people.
  2. Experience and background in operations and the ability to measure success both qualitatively and quantitatively.
  3. Strong strategic perspective to anticipate change and establish vision for the department.
  4. Strong collaboration skills with the ability to keep the customer experience as a priority.
  5. Risk management experience ideally in the Financial Services industry.
  6. Excellent communication skills (oral, written and presentations) and the ability to handle conflict with professionalism, integrity and trust.
  7. Ability to work and communicate with a wide range of individuals and at all levels within the organization.
  8. Strong critical thinking and problem solving skills with the ability to work with complex situations.
  9. Attention to detail balanced with ability to see big picture.



Preferred skills for this job:


  1. Experience within a claims environment ideally in the financial services industry.
  2. Experience with insurance products.
  3. Understanding of medical terminology.
  4. Successful track record in 4 year degree program.

Physical job requirements:


  • Ability to travel approximately 5 times per calendar year
  • Ability to work at least 40 hours per week
  • Ability to utilize keyboard, mouse and computer for up to 8 hours per day
  • Ability to utilize phone for approximately 1-4 hours per day
  • Ability to perform simple grasping including handwriting, paper manipulation, sorting, folding, etc. periodically throughout entire workday
