JOB SUMMARY

LPN - The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) willparticipate in the implementation and evaluation of patient care, under thesupervision of a registered nurse, advanced practice provider, or physician. Ensures the health, comfort and safety ofpatients. Documents a thorough medical history from patient. Contributes to theassessment of patients and administers medications or treatments as ordered.Provides technical support to healthcare professionals as needed. Counselingpatients and family members, under the direction of a registered nurse, onprevention and treatment plans. The LPN demonstrates competency and practiceswithin the full scope of nursing expertise/knowledge and utilizes appropriateage and population specific standards as designated in their assigned clinicalsetting.

MA - The Medical Assistant (MA)functions within the administration pre-defined scope of practice guidelinesper state location of practice. The MA in the ambulatory care setting collectssubjective and objective health status data from the patient or caregiver andcommunicates this data to the health care provider. Participates in the care ofpatients by providing contributing data to licensed health care professionals;and following through on the patient’s plan of care under the direction of theprovider. Communicates the provider’s written instructions for care to thepatient, or caregiver, by transmission of specifically defined information.Will participate in care for patients, across the lifespan, in all phases ofpreventative care, health maintenance, treatment, and follow-up as patientsmove in and out of care settings. Performs a variety of duties under the directsupervision of a person licensed to practice medicine. A sampling of thespecialized clinical duties performed includes, but is not limited to,obtaining vital signs, preparing patients for examinations, observing andreporting patient's signs or symptoms, and performing point of care testing.

RN -The Registered Nurse (RN) isresponsible for utilizing the nursing process (assessment, diagnosis,outcomes/planning, implementation and evaluation) to provide individualizednursing care to patients.

Responsible for the coordination ofcare, patient assessment, patient education, triage, and various other nursinginterventions. Collaborates with other inter-professional colleagues, includingphysicians, to plan, implement and evaluate care. Demonstrates competency andpractices within the full scope of nursing expertise/knowledge and utilizesappropriate age and population specific standards as designated in theirassigned clinical setting. Functions within the scopes and standards of nursingpractice as outlined in the Nurse Practice Act and Administrative Rules instate of practice and licensure. The Sanford Professional Nursing Practicerecognizes the Scope and Standards of Practice and the Code of Ethics forNurses with Interpretive Statements as published by the American NursesAssociation as the foundation of nursing care delivery and professionalconduct.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

LPN - Participate in health teaching developed by alicensed practitioner or registered nurse. Participate and be part of ahealthcare team to conduct focused nursing assessments and contribute to theplan of care. Observe patients, document and report changes in patientcondition, such as adverse reactions to medication or treatment, and take anynecessary action. Implement interventions that are assigned, ordered orprescribed by licensed practitioner or registered nurse. Follows safety measuresto ensure proper use of equipment and supplies. Establishes and maintainsproductive working relationships within and outside of own area. Contribute tothe evaluation of the plan of care by gathering, observing, recording andcommunication patient responses to nursing interventions. Communicate relevantinformation with patients and health team members to ensure quality andcontinuity of care. Adheres to legal regulations and organizational policieswhen discussing patient health information. Responsible for promoting a safeenvironment for patients, families, staff, residents, and visitors and workingcollaboratively with the multi-disciplinary health care team to provide thebest outcomes for patients. Promote a safe and therapeutic environment by providingappropriate monitoring and surveillance of the care environment.

MA - Demonstrates open, friendly, accepting, andsupportive behaviors with team members. Demonstrates the ability to followdirections. Guides patients in scheduling appointments and laboratory testsaccording to established processes and policies. Logs drug/medication data intoa computer and maintains computerized records. Perform administrative andcertain clinical duties under the direction of a licensed provider orregistered nurse. Prepare treatment rooms for patient examinations, keeping therooms neat and clean. Responsible for promoting a safe environment forpatients, families, staff, residents, and visitors and working collaborativelywith the multi-disciplinary health care team to provide the best outcomes forpatients. Understands medical terminology associated with the contents ofpatient charts.

RN - Responsible for promoting a safeenvironment for patients, families, staff, residents, and visitors and workingcollaboratively with the multi-disciplinary health care team to provide thebest outcomes for patients. Provides direct service to internal or externalcustomers. Performs triage, sorting patients needing urgent care from thosewith less severe injuries. Performing age related patient assessments andnursing interventions. Effectively delegates and supervises based on one’sstate practice act and an understanding of the concepts of responsibility,authority, and accountability. Delivers written and oral communication respondsto questions and concerns, and produce specific outcomes and impact. Coordinationand management of care for patients, including with complex needs. Builds arapport with the patient and explains the condition and course of actioneffectively.

QUALIFICATIONS

LPN

Graduate from an accreditedpractical nursing program as a Licensed Practical Nurse.

If position requires IV therapy/management skills, the following is required inNorth Dakota: graduation from a Board approved AASPN program where IV therapyis part of the curriculum or completion of an IV Therapy course approved by theNorth Dakota Board of Nursing.

Currently holds an unencumbered Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license withState Nursing board and/or possess multi-state licensure privileges. Obtainsand subsequently maintains required department specific competencies andcertifications.

MA

Must be a graduate of a recognized MedicalAssistant program. Prior experience in a healthcare setting is preferred.

Nationally certified or registered as a MedicalAssistant (MA).

Certification (CMA) obtained through a nationallyapproved certification program for medical assistant, including but not limitedto, the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), Certified ClinicalMedical Assistant (CCMA) through the Nation Health Career Association (NHCA),Clinical Medical Assistant Certification (CMAC) through the American MedicalCertification Association (AMCA), or National Certified Medical Assistant(NCMA) through the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), etc.Registration (RMA) obtained through the American Medical Technologists (AMT)also acceptable.

Additional state requirements include: South Dakota(SD) registration as a MA through the SD Board of Medical and OsteopathicExaminers. North Dakota (ND) registration as an MAIII through the ND Board ofNursing. MAs working within Minnesota (MN) and Iowa (IA) do not require stateregistration. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within six monthsof employment. Recertification as required.

RN

Graduate from an accredited nursing program preferred,including, but not limited to, American Association of Colleges of Nursing(AACN), Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), and NationalLeague for Nursing Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (NLN CNEA).Bachelor's Degree in nursing preferred.

Currently holds an unencumbered RN license with the State Board of Nursingwhere the practice of nursing is occurring and/or possess multistate licensureif in a Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) state. Obtains and subsequently maintainsrequired department specific licensure, competencies and certifications.
