(3:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday through Friday – 25 hours per week)

DIVISION: Physical Plant 

SUPERVISOR: Evening Custodial Supervisor

BASIC FUNCTION: The Custodian will maintain cleanliness of buildings and equipment in all respects; keep the Evening Custodial Supervisor and Director of Physical Facilities informed of incidents requiring action and/or replacement; handle minor repairs within their resources; assist or fill in temporarily on other jobs as assigned by the Evening Custodial Supervisor and/or Director of Physical Facilities; recommend more efficient or better ways to complete tasks and improve safety; initiate and follow a preventive maintenance process; and perform daily and scheduled housekeeping duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Required –  High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Preferred – Graduate of building, grounds, and maintenance or equivalent program and more than two years of work experience.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish languages.

DESIRED QUALITIES AND CHARACTERISTICS: 

  • Experiences working in custodial field or floor maintenance
  • Knowledge of floor care, terrazzo, tile and carpet, and floor care equipment.
  • Skilled in operation of floor machines, buffers, extractor, wet vac, and auto scrubber.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to communication and get along with co-workers.
  • Ability to work alone with supervision.
  • Knowledge of maintenance of custodial equipment.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: Duties include, but are not limited to, the following –

  • Keeping accurate and up-to-date timesheets.
  • Signing out supplies taken from maintenance supply.
  • Knowledge of proper use of floor care equipment.
  • Sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and emptying trash and butt containers.
  • Stripping, scrubbing, rinsing, and refinishing and buffing floors.
  • Extracting and/or bonneting clean carpet.
  • Removing spots in carpet and on hard floors.
  • Cleaning entrance mats.
  • Washing windows, walls, ceilings, and light fixtures.
  • Cleaning chalkboards, marker boards, and erasers.
  • Cleaning and disinfecting restroom fixtures, hardware, tile, mirrors, partitions, floors, etc.
  • Replacing restroom supplies as necessary.
  • Setting up tables and chairs for classes, meetings, and other events.
  • Loading and unloading supplies and equipment.
  • Knowing location and proper use of fire fighting equipment.
  • Being responsible for the security of buildings and contents.
  • Checking that all students are out, lights are off, and windows and doors are locked and the building is secure before leaving.
  • Opening the buildings for classes when assigned.
  • Performing security check during weekends and holidays.
  • Cleaning all tools, equipment, and supplies after each use and storing them in their proper place.
  • Removing snow as needed.
  • Spreading ice melt on sidewalks as needed.
  • Following instructions for proper use of cleaning supplies.
  • Taking down and folding the flags.
  • Turning on or off the heating/cooling equipment when assigned.
  • Putting away school vehicles in the evenings when assigned.
  • Supervising part-time employees that may be assigned.
  • Keeping the Evening Custodial Supervisor and/or Director of Physical Facilities informed of incidents requiring action and/or repair.
  • Serving on college committees.

Team members are:

  • expected to work cooperatively and promote the success of all team mates;
  • required to communicate with each other so each team member is optimally efficient on each shift;
  • to confront unavoidable conflict with other team members courteously with a focus on a solution to the conflict; and
  • required to talk out problems with the party involved in a professional courteous manner and only as a last resort ask the supervisor to get involved.
  • Any other duties as assigned by the Evening Custodial Supervisor.

WAGE/SALARY RANGE:  $9.60 to $10.60 per hour
