Job Details

The Department of Plant Pathology, North Dakota State University, has TWO postdoctoral research scientist positions available to participate in a collaborative project to develop high-breeding value durum and spring wheat germplasms with improved resistance to Fusarium head blight ( FHB ). The researcher is responsible for development of doubled haploid (DH) and backcross populations, evaluation of disease resistance in greenhouse and field nurseries, and marker-assisted selection. The researcher will use the mapping populations to develop molecular markers and whole-genome maps and identify the molecular markers linked to the resistance genes and QTLs. Marker systems include but are not restricted to SNPs, SSRs, STSs, and CAPs. The researcher will also conduct association mapping for the resistance genes in elite durum and spring wheat germplasms. The researcher will be expected to interpret and analyze the data and apply the results to practical plant breeding. This position is available for one year with subsequent years contingent upon funding and performance.

Minimum Qualifications:
• An earned Ph.D. degree in plant genetics, genomics, plant pathology, plant molecular biology/biochemistry or a related subject.
• A basic knowledge of quantitative genetics.
• Prior experience on molecular marker development, double haploid production, whole-genome and gene mapping, association mapping, QTL analysis of host resistance genes, and DNA cloning and sequencing.
• Proficiency in using QTL and association mapping software and tools such as Mapmaker, Qgene, Map Manager QTX , MapDisto, QTL Cartographer, JMP -Genomics, R package, and SAS .
• Ability to initiate and accomplish research goals including publication of results in refereed scientific journals.
