Job Responsibilities

Administers speech and language evaluations, tests or examinations to diagnose and plan treatments for clients/patients with various speech problems and swallowing disorders. Assesses clients/patients with various speech, language, cognitive or swallowing problems and develops individualized treatment plans based on clinical diagnoses.

Provides speech and language services to clients/patients; monitors disease progression and adjusts treatments accordingly. Instructs clients/patients in practicing speech and language therapeutic exercises; provides consultation for clients/patients working through speech and language treatment processes. Ensures all speech and language related standards, policies, protocols and quality requirements are met. May treat individuals of all ages with varying diagnosis and disorders. The majority of work will focus on those receiving intervention in the post-acute, long term care and home health care environments. Will demonstrate documentation in accordance with departmental guidelines and meet all regulatory requirements. Demonstrates level of treatment associated with their specialty provided to their clients/patients. Follows and adheres to accepted clinical practice guidelines of professional organization. Exhibits flexibility with acceptance of variable work schedules/assignments. Participates in activities to promote the department, Good Samaritan and Sanford Health. Will be interacting with individuals outside of the department including but not limited to providers, case managers, third party payers, public organizations, etc. May be asked to supervise assistants, aides, and students as they provide patient care, treatment, or other services. Will be expected to provide ongoing education and training to peers in the area(s) of expertise as determined by the department leadership. Performs other related duties as requested by manager. Adheres to legal regulations and organizational policies when discussing patient health information. Establishes and maintains productive working relationships within and outside of own area. Demonstrates knowledge of development and delivery of patient education for diverse audiences. Seeks opportunities to serve as a mentor. Identifies common patient safety risks within the organization and how they can be avoided. Identifies the importance of monitoring patient responses and reactions during therapy. Follows guidelines, regulations, standards and safety procedures in the therapy process. Evaluates speech-language and audiology treatments and care services provided to patients. Maintains the quality of therapy practices for clinical treatment and care services. Monitors patients' reactions to speech-language therapy; adjusts therapy if necessary. Knowledge of the value of self-motivation and initiative; ability and willingness to seek out work and the drive to accomplish goals. Recognizes ethical requirements within own specialized areas of responsibility.

Qualifications

Appropriate education level required in accordance with state licensure. Must be licensed in the state(s) of practice as Speech Therapist. Holds a Certificate of Clinical Competence issued by the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) or currently working on Clinical Fellowship Year (CFY). When applicable, may require valid driver's license. Obtains and subsequently maintains required department specific competencies and certifications.
