Job Summary

The Technician IV holds a certification in surgical instrument reprocessing and demonstrates competency in performing core duties; Surgery Instrumentation Case Build, Instrument and Equipment Decontamination, Instrument Sterilization, and Surgical Instrument Assembly. Technician may be trained in additional areas of supply management and scope reprocessing. Technicians work as a team to assure all instruments and supplies are ready and available for surgical and procedural patient care. Technicians may complete advanced education and training to advance to Technician V.

Essential Job Functions
  • Demonstrates the ability to prioritize job duties and requirements to meet standards.
  • Documents and communicates all information as required.
  • Holds certification in surgical instrument reprocessing, demonstrating competency in performing duties in the following areas.
  • Assembles and distributes instruments according to standards. Completes instrument management, including emergency carts.
  • Performs instrument, equipment, and non-lumen or single channel scope decontamination procedures according to standards. Operates all decontamination equipment. Performs all quality assurance integrity checks to standards.
  • Performs instrument sterilization procedures according to standards. Operates all sterilization equipment. Performs all quality assurance integrity checks, ensuring all recall and collection variances are completed per standards.
  • Inspects, inventories, assembles, and packages simple and complex surgical instruments and sets for sterilization.
  • May perform duties and be trained in the following additional areas.
  • Assembles and distributes supplies to standards. Completes supply management.
  • Inventories and processes discrepancies in patient case supplies.
  • Assembles and distributes supplies to standards. Completes supply management, including receiving, back orders, etc. Inventories and processes discrepancies in patient case supplies. Responds to emergency events with supplies and carts to standard.
  • Processes patient use supply charges and credits. Completes audits of charge processes. Performs all inventory processes and functions as resource, including surgical special orders and implant fulfillment.
  • Assembles and distributes surgical supplies and instrumentation to standards. Completes instrumentation management. Inventories and process discrepancies in surgery cases. Oversees department instrument flow and coordinates with surgery department.
  • Performs decontamination and disinfection of complex, multi-channel scopes without elevator mechanisms. Performs high level disinfection of semi-critical and critical instrumentation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or needed to meet the needs of the department/organization.
  • Demonstrates understanding and follows infection control policies and procedures according to standard operating procedure.
  • Maintains requirements for age specific competencies for the position and demonstrates the knowledge or principles of growth and developments and the skills necessary to provide patient/customer care/services.


License, Certification & Registration-*May be certified in one or the other.
  • Certified Registered Central Services Technician, International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materia Management (IAHCSMM), Prior to Start Date

  • Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician, Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD), Prior to Start Date


Education & Experience
  • A minimum of 6 months of related experience, Preferred
