Requirements

The candidate must have a completed a PhD degree by start date and have at least one year of relevant research experience. A DVM is not required for this position. Candidates should be able to demonstrate some experience in molecular biology, genomics, gene annotation and bioinformatics. Candidates with a strong background in molecular biology will be given preference. The candidate has to demonstrate an interest in infectious diseases. Strong organizational, quantitative analysis, and writing skills are necessary. The ability to work independently and in teams is critical for the success of this position.

About the Job

A newly funded research project that investigates how porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) virus evolves and spreads is hiring a Researcher to drive this new research program in the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM). The project was awarded to a CVM, University of Minnesota, consortium (https//) and collaborators at the University of Edinburgh's Roslin Institute. This research will help scientists and producers anticipate a swine herd's susceptibility to different variants of PRRSV, and customize mitigation efforts accordingly.

Duties Include

1) Conduct research and provide technical assistance to the PI, students, and trainees in the Schroeder lab on virology, molecular data analysis, genomic analysis, quasispecies dynamics and other miscellaneous problems related to disease epidemiology.

2) Collect and organize data for research activities.

3) Collaborate with the PIs in the consortium in the generation and testing of research hypotheses and data analysis, writing of papers, grants, and reports, and preparation of presentations and lectures

4) Attend, participate, or present at laboratory meetings, seminars, graduate and undergraduate lectures, and conferences as needed

5) Perform miscellaneous laboratory and office duties as assigned by the Dr Schroeder including, but not limited to, ordering supplies and reagents and help the PI in the organization and coordination of meetings and projects.

6) Maintain frequent communication with other faculty and collaborators, including, if required traveling to destinations to meet with collaborators and collect data.

In addition to delivering this project, the candidate will be required to develop, drive and deliver on sequencing based collaborative projects on SARS-CoV-2 (with Lions Gift of Sight), honey bee viruses such as DWV (with UoM Bee Lab & University of Michigan) and a dairy cattle virus, BLV (with Dr Scott Wells).
