Nutrition Educator

The Nutrition Educator is an integral member of the UW-Madison Division of Extension and the Pierce, Polk and St. Croix Counties FoodWIse program team and works alongside the people of Wisconsin to improve lives and communities. Extension serves the people and communities of Wisconsin by addressing local, statewide and national issues, improving lives through research-based education, fostering partnerships and action, and facilitating positive impacts.

Our nutrition educators are peer educators who work closely with the FoodWIse Nutrition Program Coordinator to support and empower people to adopt healthy food and physical activity habits by delivering education where people live and work. Education topics include:
- basic nutrition
- low impact physical activity
- food safety
- food budgeting

This position is a part of the Division of Extension Institute of Health and Well-Being and the FoodWIse Program. FoodWIse is a community-based nutrition program that seeks to empower individuals with limited incomes to make healthy choices to achieve healthy lives and reduce health disparities. FoodWIse is federally funded by the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program-Education (SNAP-Ed) and Expanded Food and Nutrition Program (EFNEP) grants.

DEGREE AND AREA OF SPECIALIZATION:
-High school graduate or equivalent required.

MINIMUM YEARS AND TYPE OF RELEVANT WORK EXPERIENCE:
Required:
-Ability to teach interactive lessons to children and/or adults in group settings;
-Work, volunteer or life experience with people or groups with limited income;
-Ability to communicate effectively using a variety of methods and technology;
-Ability to effectively work with people from different cultural backgrounds, including those associated with race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, socioeconomic status, age, gender, disability, sexual orientation, and other aspects of human diversity.

Preferred:
-Volunteer or work experience related to food and nutrition education;
-Spanish speaking, writing and comprehension skills; knowledge of Hispanic/Latino culture;
-Understanding of the culture and history of the St. Croix Chippewa Nation;
-Ability to teach and communicate effectively with youth and adults by speaking, writing, and with technology;
-Experience working effectively as a member of a work group or committee;
-Experience managing multiple tasks, timelines, and schedules while maintaining high quality work;
-Ability to work cooperatively with other agencies, community-based services, or organizations;
-Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to build and maintain professional work environments;
-Demonstrated sensitivity to and success in working with a diverse range of individuals, groups, and organizations.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
-Division of Extension offices for this position are located in Baldwin, Ellsworth and Balsam Lake, Wisconsin. Final location to be determined with successful candidate.
-The primary accountability relationship for this position is the Pierce, Polk and St. Croix Counties Nutrition Program Coordinator (Area 5) for supervision, compensation and benefits and performance reviews.
-This positions primary programming focus is in Pierce, Polk and St. Croix Counties; however, some programming may also be conducted over a broader geographical area.
-Office location and programming coverage is contingent on continued availability of federal funds and location may be reassigned to align with funder and Extension programming priorities.
-Assume daily travel throughout geographies served and occasional travel within the state.
-Expectation to make arrangements for transportation adequate to meet position responsibilities and essential job functions.
-Work evenings or weekends as needed to meet programming needs
-Must be able to carry educational equipment, up to 25 lbs.
-Participate in low impact physical activity exercises, dependent on local program delivery.
