Overview

Part-time, un-benefited position working 32 hours per two week pay period. Days of work are Monday - Friday with hours from 6:30 am - 3 pm. Required on call every 5th weekend and one night per week. Holidays rotation.

Coordinates total nursing care for patients of all ages utilizing the nursing process; directs patient and family teaching; provides leadership by working cooperatively with ancillary nursing and other patient team personnel in maintaining standards for professional nursing practice in the clinical setting.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains the standards of nursing care and implements the policies and procedures of the hospital and Clinical Services.
  • Provides direct patient care for assigned patients of all ages including pediatrics, adult and geriatrics, utilizing the nursing process including assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation.
  • Assesses the patient's condition considering age-specific developmental needs, educational needs of patient and family and discharge planning needs.
  • Develops a plan of care for the patient and prescribes appropriate nursing interventions to achieve expected patient outcomes.
  • Evaluates patient outcomes and modifies plan of care as patient's needs or condition changes.
  • Directs and participates in discharge planning and patient and family/significant other education.
  • Reports pertinent observations and reactions regarding patients to the appropriate person (i.e., physicians, Unit Supervisor, and/or Nursing Manager) and records those observations accurately and concisely.
  • Delegates nursing care to other health care members in accordance with the patient's needs and the nursing personnel's capabilities and qualifications.
  • Administers medications, IV therapy and performs treatments for assigned patients as ordered by the physician.
  • Assists physicians with special tests and procedures such as thoracentesis, lumbar tap, etc.
  • Ensures that equipment is maintained in a clean and safe manner.
  • Participates in orientation of new personnel and performance evaluations of nursing staff.
  • Coordinates nursing care of patients when scheduled for therapy or procedures by other departments.
  • Establishes and maintains effective communications with patients, families and staff to contribute to the hospital mission.
  • Initiates and/or assists in emergency measures for sudden adverse developments in patients such as cardiac arrest.
  • Participates in the maintenance of a clean and safe environment.
  • Participates in staff development programs.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.


Surgical Services Pre-Admission RN
  • Ensures all charts are complete, with orders, medication, etc. entered into EPIC.
  • Ensures the H&P is current and contact physician as appropriate.
  • Reviews all H&Ps to ensure thoroughness and determine if any further reports, test results need to be obtained.
  • Consults with anesthesia with any concerns re: patients' medical condition or need for further tests.
  • Contacts all patients to discuss medical history, gives pre-operative instructions, starts the discharge instruction process, answers any questions.
  • Will assist calling patients with their arrival times.
  • Does face to face intake and pre-assessment for total joint patients at the time of their scheduled lab appointment.
  • Complete the patient call-backs for Surgical Services and the Patient Care Unit.
  • Will be responsible for posting surgical services charges as requested.
  • Will be cross trained to: Endoscopy, Surgery Center, PACU and OR.
  • Will be on call a minimum of every 6th weekend and every 6th holiday.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or requested.


Surgical Services Charge Nurse
  • Charge Nurse Duties: 6:00-2:30
  • Get report and staffing changes from Surgical Services Manager
  • Carry assigned Unit Phone
  • Relieve OR, PACU, Endoscopy and Surgery Center for breaks and meals as needed
  • Assist staff with difficult IV starts before calling anesthesia
  • Acts as a liaison between patient, family, physician and other members of the health care team
  • Report and follow-up on potential risk management and safety issues on a timely basis to Surgical Services Manager
  • Seeks assistance from Surgical Services Manager in problem-solving
  • Works in collaboration with the Surgical Services Manager to assess the staffing needs and assignments needed for the next day
  • Promotes an environment in which the patient care team can work cooperatively and productively toward departments goals and objectives
  • Responsible for the daily patient flow in the department to include assisting with pre-op admissions and discharges as needed.
  • Delegates assignments and duties to personnel within the scope of their abilities and competencies
  • Responds as a member of the Rapid Response Team
  • Serve as resource person for nursing staff on the unit
  • Will be on call a minimum of: every 4th weekend, every 4th holiday and one weekday per week (2:30-0600)
  • Performs other duties as assigned or requested


Qualifications

Work requires a professional level of knowledge acquired by completing an accredited RN nursing education program. Must hold RN licensure from the ND State Board of Nursing for the current year.

ED staff nurse position requires PALS/ ACLS certification.

TNCC is highly encouraged.

ICU staff nurse position requires completion of a basic cardiology class for nurses and ACLS certification.

Family BirthPlace (FBP) staff nurse position requires completion of a basic fetal monitoring course and neonatal resuscitation course (NRP).

Previous work experience preferred but not required for staff RN positions in Patient Care Unit (PCU). (See exceptions indicated below).

Time to reach competency on the job: 3 weeks to 3 months for entry level staff RN.

Surgical Services Staff RN, ICU Staff RN, FBP Staff RN, ED Staff RN and PACU RN positions: Preference for a minimum of one year nursing experience following completion of RN nursing education program. Time to reach competency on the job: 3 weeks to 3 months following orientation to the work area.
