Job Summary

Community Paramedics (CP’s) may provide primary care and/or advanced life support, including medical evaluation, treatment and stabilization of the ill and injured with the goal of reducing morbidity. Supports existing health services. Provides integrated health services in partnership with other health professional. Extends access to health services delivery in under-served and general populations, including primary care, public health, disease management, prevention and wellness, mental health, and dental health. Performs other duties as required.
Community Paramedics may need to assist and give direction to additional EMS Responders at the scene and/or during transport. CP's must be competent in trauma and medical situations and should possess the knowledge and the necessary skills to provide lifesaving interventions in a pre-hospital setting.
Community Paramedics, based on their assessment will provide primary care to adults, infants and children, medical and trauma patients. Individuals should be able to determine the appropriate facility where patients should receive their care based on their knowledge of the condition of the patients and the extent of their injuries/illness unless otherwise indicated by medical direction.
CP's assess patients in the prehospital setting, administers additional care as indicated or given by medical direction. May use equipment included in the medical transport environments. Observe, record and report to medical control the patient's condition injury/illness, the treatment provided and reactions to drugs or treatment at the prehospital scene and in transit to the receiving facility staff for purposes of records and diagnostics.
Exhibit good communication with the patients and primary care physicians to provide patient's status and other critical information. Complete extensive written documentation on patient condition and treatment provided, as well as understand all applicable legal, moral and ethical issues surrounding the prehospital medical service.
Maintain communication with the patient and the family, comfort and reassure patients and be able to demonstrate concern and courtesy while maintaining confidentiality of the patient's information.
Depending on location of position, work hours will vary depending on patient needs. This may include overtime, call, backup call, nights, days, weekends, and holidays.

Qualifications

High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required. Associate degree in Paramedic Technology or Paramedicine preferred.
For the state of Minnesota (MN), successful completion of an accredited Paramedic Training Program and Community Paramedic Training Program required for licensing at time of hire.
For the state of North Dakota (ND), successful completion of an accredited Paramedic Training Program and Community Paramedic Training Program required within two years. If the Community Paramedic in ND will be providing care across state lines into MN, completion of programs is required at time of hire to accommodate state requirements.
Minimum three years’ of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) experience required.
Displays thorough knowledge of paramedic principles, practices and techniques. Displays knowledge of how various equipment such as a monitor or defibrillator work and how to troubleshoot problems that arise.
Holds national registry status at a Paramedic level.
Depending on state requirements, may need state license. Additional licensures required depending on state; Paramedic (PAR) Certification and 700 completed and continued education hours as mandated by accreditation.
Current Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS). Current valid driver’s license, and must meet all medical guidelines for Sanford Health Category I drivers.
