Position Information

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Responsible for providing services that support the overall mental health of the student body through counseling, education, and prevention programming.
  2. Responsible for serving as the campus coordinator for substance abuse prevention.
  3. Responsible for assisting with processes to support student enrollment and retention including student registration activities and outreach initiatives.

Is directly accountable and responsible to the Director of Counseling and Advising Services.

Position Description & Details

Provide student counseling services, coordinate substance abuse prevention, and conduct outreach to support student mental health/wellness - 70%
  1. Provides personal counseling and referral services to students who may be experiencing psychological and behavioral difficulties. Conduct intake appointments, evaluate student needs, and complete assessments. Provide crisis intervention services.
  2. Supports the development of coping skills and success strategies for students with emotional, mood, behavioral, personality, or other interpersonal concerns. Develop, implement and maintain individualized interventions and / or plans for counseling services for each student. Observe student behavior and engage in follow up outreach to students when indicated.
  3. Provides referral to community agencies and coordinate community-based services. Act as liaison between BSC and other mental health, medical, and /or social services agencies serving the mental health needs of the BSC population.
  4. Responds to trauma incidents impacting the BSC community and provide crisis-intervention and grief/loss supportive services upon supervisor request.
  5. Provides educational presentations to students and BSC faculty/staff on topics related to student mental health awareness and substance abuse prevention.
  6. Collects and evaluates data relative to implementing effective counseling interventions. Develop monthly awareness campaigns and related outreach initiatives in support of student mental health. Develop and implement an annual action plan that responds to the mental health needs of BSC students.
  7. Supports students and faculty with implementing classroom behavior management strategies. Support faculty who have students with personal concerns via consultation and professional development. Work in partnership with BSC faculty and staff to develop an electronic referral process for students.
  8. Increases student access to mental health services via telehealth.
  9. Implements and maintains an electronic record keeping system for counseling records.
  10. Provides employment related services to students and assist with career workshops and events.
  11. Provides a safe and confidential space for LGBTQ students. Supports BSC's diverse student population.
  12. Serves on institutional and state committees.
  13. Completes required state and federal reporting.

Assist with processes to support student enrollment and retention - 20%
  1. Assists students with enrolling for classes at registration events via individual appointments.
  2. Possesses a working knowledge of student development.
  3. Participates in outreach initiatives to increase student engagement and retention.
  4. Provides vocational assessment and career guidance to students who are undecided in their educational program or require assistance with identifying a career path.

Miscellaneous duties - 10%
  1. Supports innovation, creativity and ideas to improve/enhance processes, functions, etc. in the department and as a whole for the College.
  2. Helps ensure the success of the College's health and wellness efforts by performing other duties as assigned.
  3. Occasional after-hours duties may be required.

Status: Full-time (100%) Exempt

Minimum Requirements

  • Master's degree in counseling, social work, clinical psychology or a closely related field with experience in counseling and programming.
  • Demonstrated ability to create connections with diverse populations, including college students.
  • Knowledge of psychological disorders and counseling skills.
  • Knowledge of community resources and ability to make referrals when indicated.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work cooperatively with diverse groups.
  • Ability to interpret statistical and analytical data and reports.
  • Proficient in computer software programs (i.e., Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, email, Internet and electronic calendar).


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in counseling in a higher education setting.
  • Experience in alcohol and drug prevention programming.
  • Prior experience working with adolescents and/or adults.
  • Professional licensure or certification in counseling, social work, psychology or a closely related field.
