Position Information

Position Description & Details: To provide leadership in the operation of the Northern Crops Institute's feedmill. As a feed technologist, encourage the use of Northern-grown crops and offer advice on formulation and manufacture of diets, both experimental and commercial. Maintain a close working relationship with NDSU Animal Sciences faculty, graduate and under-graduates to help them in their research and educational programs. Provide the same assistance to faculty, staff and students from the Land Grant Universities of MN, MT and SD. Assist the director with market development and promotion of Northern Grown crops into the feed sector through development of short-courses, seminars and demonstrations. Provide Feed input to the NCI Director while helping to develop and implement the NCI vision on livestock and feed production.

Responsibilities: Feed Production to s upervise the manufacture of complete feeds, supplements, concentrates and premixes used by the on-campus livestock units of NDSU, the livestock units of the NDSU Ag. Exp. Stations, and upon request the livestock units of the Land Grant universities of Minnesota, Montana and South Dakota. Oversight for regulation compliance and the following of Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). Monthly updates of feed pricing schedules, production record and major ingredient use, copies to NCI Director, ARS main office and farm manager. Assist with feed raw materials procurement and storage. Maintain computer formula records and keep nutrient profiles current based on lab analysis of raw materials. Maintain automatic batching capability of the feedmill. Encourage faculty and researchers increased experimental feed production to demonstrate the efficacy and/or the unique properties and advantages of using Northern-grown crops in food animal production. International: As requested, provide educational programs in feed manufacturing technology, food animal production and related topics. Programs can be presented at the NCI or in-country. When invited, serve as an on-site technical consultant. Provide information on utilization and processing of Northern-grown crops to optimum advantage. Domestic: As requested, provide educational programs in feed manufacturing technology, food animal production and related topics to domestic users of Northern Gown crops. Programs can be presented by the NCI or in partnership with a partner university, or other professional organization. Respond to questions from food animal producers, feed manufacturers and allied industries in the four-state region. When asked, provide consultations to companies seeking area specific information. Work with the director to design a strategy to promote education programs and technical service offerings. Maintain lines of communication with the commodity groups of the four-state region, highlighting programs, research efforts and fostering positive relationships. Continue with mill upgrades and maintenance. As funding permits, obtain new, or up-grade existing equipment to keep mill processing capability on-par with industry standard. Work with the director to identify future equipment needs and help identify potential funding sources. Organizations: maintain membership in applicable professional societies.

Minimum Qualifications:
* B.S. in Grain Science, Feed Technology/Cereal Science, Agricultural Engineering, Animal Science, or related field
* Three years of related experience in commercial feed mill operations/feed preparation or related
* Good oral, written and interpersonal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:
* M.S. in G rain Science, Feed Technology/Cereal Science, Agricultural Engineering, Animal Science, or related field
* Feed Milling Feed Formulation software, Statistical Process Control
