Position Description & Details:

The Department of Plant Sciences, North Dakota State University, has a postdoctoral research scientist position available to participate in a collaborative project focusing on molecular characterization of genes for resistance to Cercospora leaf spot (CLS) in sugar beet. The selected candidate will be responsible for maintaining sugar beet collections, development of mapping populations, pathogen inoculation and disease resistance phenotyping, marker designing and genetic mapping, plant transformation and characterization of gene function using forward and revere genetic tools. The researcher will be expected to interpret and analyze the data and publish the results in peer-reviewed journals. This position is available for two years with subsequent years contingent upon funding and performance.

Advertised Salary: $50,000

Minimum Qualifications:
  • An earned Ph.D. degree in genetics and breeding or a closely related discipline.
  • Working experience of plant disease resistance.
  • Experience of QTL mapping and/or genome wide association studies.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Able to initiate and accomplish research goals including publication of results in refereed scientific journals.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior experience in greenhouse and field evaluation of fungal plant diseases.
  • Experience of SNP genotype calling from genotype-by-sequence or whole genome sequences, RNA-seq analysis, quantitative RT-PCR, etc.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • A good record of publications in peer-reviewed journals.
