Job Summary

Prepare medications under the direction of a pharmacist. May measure, mix, count out, label, and record amounts and dosages of medications according to prescription orders. In a retail/community pharmacy setting, the Pharmacy Technician duties consist of assisting pharmacists in compounding, preparing and dispensing medical prescriptions to the public after receiving information from customers or patients according to written/faxed prescriptions. Maintains proper storage and security conditions for drugs; ensures that equipment is functioning properly and assists in resolution of equipment maintenance and repair; controls inventory stock level and timeline to ensure adequate supplies. Assists with billing related functions. May assist with departmental quality assurance and other customer- or patient-focused services with oversight from supervisory staff; assists in the creation and maintenance of a safe working environment and conditions that adhere to state laws and regulations. Requires use of and proficiency in multiple computer programs.
The Pharmacy Technician position is located in different work environments and duties may vary based upon location or setting; also depending on location, there may be an overlap of retail/inpatient responsibilities.

Sanford Specialty Pharmacy supports patients on high dollar/specialty medications (ie Multiple Sclerosis, Cystic Fibrosis, Hepatitis C, Oncology, etc.). The Specialty Pharmacy is unique pharmacy environment that operates as a call center. Pharmacy staff provides exceptional customer service to patients through this mode of communication. In this role a Specialty Pharmacy technician will focus on the processing, filling and shipping of prescriptions according to the laws and regulations under the supervision of a pharmacist. This individual will also perform outreach calls to patients to coordinate refills of their specialty medications and will answer incoming phone calls. Interactions with patients will be appropriately documented in the electronic medical record (EMR) in coordination with therapy management workflow of the Specialty Pharmacy. In this role you will interact with patients, prescribers, nurses, 3rd party payors, Sanford retail pharmacy staff and other outpatient pharmacies to help facilitate patients correctly receiving their specialty medications.
Ideal candidate will have strong retail pharmacy knowledge, excellent customer service skills, and ability to work well on a team.
Department Details:
Sanford Specialty Pharmacy is open Monday through Friday 8am to 5pm. The pharmacy is closed all major holidays.

Qualifications

High School graduate or GED required. Must have completed any additional required education as specified in the state of practice in order to become a registered Pharmacy Technician.
North Dakota: To be eligible to be registered by the board of pharmacy as a pharmacy technician the person must have completed one of the following requirements: a) Successful completion of an American society of health systems pharmacists accredited academic program; or b) an American society of health systems pharmacists accredited on-the-job training program.
Must maintain annual registration as a Pharmacy Technician through the State Board of Pharmacy in state(s) of practice and/or possess multi-state privileges as required by position. Must also complete the required hours of Pharmacy Technician continuing education.
North Dakota: An applicant for registration as a pharmacy technician must have obtained certification by a national certification body approved by the board of pharmacy. A technician registered after August 1, 1995, must obtain and maintain certification by a national certification body approved by the board of pharmacy. A registered technician not holding certification on April 1, 2011, must obtain certification by March 1, 2014. The Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is an approved certification body.
