Job Summary
The Quality Assurance Specialist performs duties and responsibilities that support and ensure overall department quality, safety and regulatory compliance. This position develops expertise as a resource and engages with department leaders, employees and system care partners to promote and support quality and safety assessment and improvement activities, utilizing various means to track, analyze, prepare and communicate information.
Essential Job Functions
Coordinates and organizes the laboratory quality management program in collaboration with laboratory leadership to maintain compliance and promote process improvement. Compiles and analyzes data, summarizing, and reporting metrics and outcomes. Facilitates and/or assists with improvement efforts, educates staff and conducts quality program related training.

Maintains working knowledge of regulatory and accreditation standards that apply to the operational scope of health system laboratory services and provides support across service areas to ensure compliance. Proficiently utilizes key software applications that support compliance efforts.

Develops, revises and maintains general laboratory and related quality and safety procedures. Reviews validation plans, procedures, training documents, and other documents as assigned for regulatory compliance.

Proficiently uses key software which supports electronic document management required for regulatory compliance. Develops subject matter expertise to provide training and support to all laboratories in utilizing the application to its fullest capacity.

Coordinates and organizes the laboratory safety programs in collaboration with laboratory leadership to maintain compliance and sustain a safe work environment for all laboratory staff. Compiles and analyzes data, summarizing, and reporting metrics and outcomes. Facilitates and/or assists with improvement efforts, educates staff and conducts safety related training.

Maintains the department documentation and categorization of safety reports. Monitors responses for patient safety and medical device reports for timely completion. Performs trend analysis of events, complaints, and quality indicators with subsequent performance of root cause analysis and process improvement.

Collaborates with leaders and key stakeholders in preparation for surveys by licensing and accrediting agencies. Prepares and submits pre-survey materials. Conducts interim reviews and audits and facilitates the documentation and tracking of responses to all deficiencies. Examples include mock inspections, interim audits, environment of care (EOC) rounds and document reviews.

Participates in formal survey events as the inspection coordinator. Organizes efforts with leaders, providers, key personnel, and surveyors. Speaks to quality and safety standards during survey and coordinates post-survey follow up to meet expected submission timeframes.

Performs other duties as assigned or needed to meet the needs of the department/organization.
  • Demonstrates understanding and follows infection control policies and procedures according to standard operating procedure.
  • Maintains requirements for age specific competencies for the position and demonstrates the knowledge or principles of growth and developments and the skills necessary to provide patient/customer care/services.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of and compliance with:
    • All pertinent safety, health and environmental policies, procedures and guidelines.
    • Working safely, without causing harm or risk to self, others or property.
    • The work environment safety procedures and prompt reporting of unsafe practices, procedures, accidents, injuries or other safety violations to the Leader.
    • The use of all safety equipment and personal protective equipment.
