Job Summary

The Lead Computational Medical Informatics Analyst at Sanford implements computational methodologies using data collected within the electronic medical record and directly from patients using patient portal. The intent is to support decision support, computational description of human phenotypes, the integration of genomic data into the electronic medical record, and the analysis of phenome, genome and other omics datasets. Responsible for contributing to the planning, implementation and support of information systems for the Imagenetics Initiative and Medical Genetics; this includes electronic consenting and a process management system integrated with the electronic medical record, medical genetics laboratory (biobank, molecular, cytogenetics) and specialty clinic operations. The information systems and algorithms developed and maintained by this individual will be used to gather, generate, and track patient data and to develop medically actionable hypotheses including differential diagnoses. Familiarity with security and privacy requirements applicable for working with patient data in a medical environment and in the development of appropriate ethically and legally compliant policies is desirable. Facility with collection of the human phenome and application of it to analysis of human genetic data and disease descriptions is required. Experience should include demonstrated data management, process management, and biomedical informatics. Also, experience with electronic medical record (EMR) APIs and interfaces is highly desired. Experience programing in one of the following languages is required (Python, Perl, R, and Java). Demonstrated expertise in more than one of these languages is highly desirable.
Experience with the integration and management of multiple data sources, workflows and enabling integrated management of and reporting on those data and processes through graphical user interfaces is desirable. Preference will be given to individuals with expertise in database management and medical and/or research informatics. Essential to the applicant’s successful fulfillment of this role is a documented track record of fiscal, managerial, academic and technical leadership and productivity; measures will include publications and funding. The successful candidate will support the computational medical informatics group at Sanford and its clinical and research obligations. Will have the opportunity to seek membership in Sanford Research and access to its infrastructure. The successful candidate may be eligible for academic appointment at South Dakota State University and the University of South Dakota at a level appropriate for his or her academic credentials. Will report to the Director of Computational Medical Informatics.

Qualifications

MD, Ph.D. or comparable terminal degree(s) is required. At least 3 years’ experience in medical informatics or bioinformatics or a closely related field is required and at least 2 of those years must have been in a leadership/managerial position.
