Position Description & Details: Tenure track, 60% teaching, 40% research, academic year (9 month) appointment.

Responsibilities:

The Department of Agribusiness and Applied Economics invites applications for a tenure track position at the Assistant/Associate Professor level to begin in August 2021. The Tenure home is in the Department of Agribusiness and Applied Economics, but the position will also be affiliated with the Challey Institute for Global Innovation & Growth (Challey Institute) and the Center for Public Choice and Private Enterprise (PCPE). . The successful candidate will be expected to conduct research, teaching and outreach that contributes to the missions of Challey Institute and PCPE.

Teaching responsibilities may include economics courses at the introductory or intermediate level with additional opportunity to teach upper division and graduate level courses in the candidate's field of expertise. Teaching load will include three courses per year depending on departmental and Challey Institute/PCPE needs and the candidate's research and teaching interests.

Faculty evaluations for this position are based on effective teaching and advising at both the undergraduate and/or graduate levels; successful publication in leading disciplinary journals; active participation in professional activities; satisfactory service to the Challey Institute and PCPE, department, university, state, and profession; and pursuit of extramural funding sufficient to support an active research program.

Applicants are sought with specialization in Energy Economics, International Economics, International Macroeconomics, and/or Labor Economics. Candidates with a modern skillset in applied analytical techniques are prioritized. Successful candidates will be expected to contribute to the Challey Institute and PCPE mission statements through participation in and promotion of activities and programs. Candidates are particularly sought at the advanced assistant or associate professor level and who incorporate the perspective of Public Choice, New Institutional, or Austrian Economics into their research.

The Sheila and Robert Challey Institute for Global Innovation & Growth ( https://www.ndsu.edu/challeyinstitute/ ) is an interdisciplinary institute that aims to advance understanding in the areas of innovation, trade, and institutions to identify policies and solutions that enhance economic growth and opportunity. The Challey Institute works toward achieving its mission by engaging in research, student programming, and outreach in the areas of (1) international trade, investment, and immigration, (2) innovation and entrepreneurship, and (3) institutions and policy.

The Center for Public Choice and Private Enterprise ( www.ndsu.edu/centers/PCPE ) engages in research and educational programs to uncover the institutions and policies that encourage and enhance human well-being.

Advertised Salary: The position offers a competitive salary and generous benefits package. Appointment will be at the Assistant Professor or Associate Professor level depending on experience and qualifications.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • An earned Ph.D. in economics or related field by date of appointment;
  • desire and ability to support the missions of PCPE and Challey Institute;
  • ability to publish high impact research in quality academic journals;
  • ability to engage in effective teaching;
  • a policy-focused research agenda in Energy Economics, International Economics, International Macroeconomics, International Trade, or Labor Economics;
  • effective oral communication skills;
  • effective written communication skills;
  • ability to develop/lead extracurricular educational programs, e.g. reading groups and seminars.
  • Ability to contribute to the teaching of a proposed Ph.D. core curriculum (Micro, Macro, or Econometrics);

  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Working knowledge of at least one from: Public Choice Economics, New Institutional Economics, Austrian Economics;
  • ability and willingness to teach courses in the agribusiness curriculum;
  • record of high quality publication in one of the following fields: Energy Economics, International Economics, International Trade, or Labor Economics;
  • expertise in advanced applied methods;
  • experience developing/leading extracurricular educational programs, e.g. reading groups and seminars;
  • experience in policy outreach and research;
  • evidence of teaching effectiveness;
  • demonstrated record of communicating research findings to diverse audiences;
  • demonstrated experience in pursuit of extramural funds and stakeholder engagement;
