Our client needs a Cable Design Engineer who will be responsible for executing and leading the full design process from conception through production of wires and cables used in medical devices. You will report to the Director of R&D. This is a growing division of a large, well-established company. They are located N.E. of the Twin Cities.

What you will be doing:

  • Most of this position is spent engaging directly with both internal and external customers to gain technical specification and application information to produce new medical cable designs/drawings and create costing for project requests. Your cable designs will be for surgical tools/robotics, medical imaging devices/equipment, or equipment in surgical suites.
  • You will also be responsible for creating custom cable products for other industry verticals, requiring a versatile mindset and ability to apply design skills to other applications outside of medical.
  • Work closely with Document Control and Process Engineers to support seamless integration of new products and/or engineering changes.
  • Conduct ISO 13485 risk assessments and be responsible for DFMEA, DVVP&R, and Critical Design Reviews.
  • Review designs and ensure compliance with all necessary performance specifications.
  • Translate RFQs and internal development needs into application specific product designs.
  • Input cable architecture, assembly, and customer requirements into internal cable building software.
  • Maintain accurate design layouts in cable building software through engineering change orders.
  • You will be updating their current designs as well. Experience either in that field or with medical devices on the wire/cable side is needed.

What they are looking for:

  • Associates degree (preferably B.S.) in Electrical, Mechanical or Design Engineering and 8 to 12 years' experience in wire/cable designed for medical devices.
  • Strong understanding of electrical requirements for medical products and how that translates into the design aspect with the cabling components which supply power, control, and signal to the device.
  • Direct experience working in an ISO 13485 environment.
  • Strong experience creating DFMEAs.
  • Strong 3D CAD experience, preferably SolidWorks.
  • Design experience with extrusion processes utilizing PVC, Polyolefins, TPE, Nylon, Polyurethane, Fluoropolymers, and Cross-Linked Polyethylene compounds and their characteristics in respect to performance in end use applications.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements and their impact on design (UL, CSA, ISO 13485, ISO 10993, USO VI, etc.).
  • Excellent project management skills and highly organized workflow.
  • A PMP certification would be a plus.
  • The ability to work independently and maintain good customer relations.
  • Excellent communication skills with customers and staff at all levels.
