PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF POSITION:

Analyze customer requirements to design fabricated components and systems for manufacturability. Work in a fast paced environment and cooperate with operations, sourcing, quality, project management to meet and exceed customer expectations. A Design Engineer seeks to balance various aspects of the project, including safety, cost, manufacturability. Additionally, a Design Engineer researches advanced technology regarding best practices in the field of high precision stainless steel manufacturing and finds cost-effective solutions. Provide input into make versus buy decisions for components within a system.


MAJOR AREAS FOR ACCOUNTABILITY:

  • Creating designs, specifications and blueprints along with a team of other engineers and drafters.
  • Coordinating efforts with production to ensure that the design meets manufacturability capabilities including tolerance stack up and surface finish.
  • Building a prototype if needed, for testing and approval.
  • Customer site visits, if needed on projects that require onsite installation.
  • Customer visits to better understand the requirements, for complex and large systems.
  • Making modifications to existing designs or products, to improve their performance or to integrate new technology.
  • Engineering calculations to size components in order to meet performance requirements such as speed, torque, flow rate, stress, fatigue, pressure, vacuum, and other parameters.
  • Ensuring that the intended product or structure will be safe, dependable, cost effective and meet regulatory requirements.
  • Work closely with the quality assurance team to define a quality/inspection plan and ensure that required quality standards are adhered to.
  • Provides optimum cooperation and complete information to Project Manager to ensure on-time and accurate job completion.
  • Creates solid models or update models provided by customer.
  • Ability to use ERP system (Made to Manage) to create accurate job bills of materials and routings for purposes of creating quotes, sales orders, and jobs.
  • Works closely with the Project Manager to develop production plan entered into Made to Manage, purchase necessary articles / buy outs, oversee assembly of products.
  • Reviews customer models and drawings for missing or incorrect information required in producing the customer's part through to completion.
  • Recommends new methods and procedures to improve manufacturing efficiency.
  • Keeps up-to-date with all research and development as appropriate with changes in manufacturing technology including fabrication, welding, laser, finishing, assembly.
  • Identifies job flow problems, root causes, and recommends corrective action to ensure timely and efficient production effort. Reviews jobs and drawings with the Project Manager and makes and records changes as needed post-job.
  • Maintains and portrays a high degree of professionalism both within and outside the organization, encouraging excellence through example. Keeps supervisor informed.
  • Complies with Company and Department policies and procedures as applicable.
  • Maintains a positive attitude and promotes a team approach throughout the Department.
  • Ensures that a favorable Company image is presented to customers, and that all customer relationships are based on honesty and integrity.
  • Plays an active role in project related kick off meetings to assist in the development of project timelines, requirements, and customer delivery schedules.
  • Assists the Project manager to identify workload and anticipate workload problems; maintains a continual awareness of potential bottlenecks or droughts that could negatively impact the achievement of on-schedule completion of in-process operations; recommends and/or implements short-term solutions in order to ensure timeliness and responsible leveling of the work load.
  • Works with production supervisors for Laser, Fabrication, and Machining and shop personnel to maintain/improve productivity through effective communication/coordination and movement of parts and material.


QUALIFICATIONS FOR ENTRY:

  • BS degree in Engineering in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Industrial, Machine Design or related field with 5 years of experience in a manufacturing or fabrication environment.
  • AAS degree in relevant field such as Mechanical Design with 10 years of experience in a manufacturing or fabrication environment.
  • Solid experience with product design and manufacturing, especially Design For Manufacturability.
  • 3D CAD required (preferably Solid Works).
  • ASME, FEA calculations preferred.
  • Experience with FMEA, DVP&R, Quality Control, Site-Installation a plus.
  • Project development and leadership skills are essential.
  • Experience with customer interaction and working under time constraints a definite plus.
  • Experience with software/controls engineering and system design principles a plus.
  • Professional work experience reviewing and analyzing prototypes and product modifications preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Anderson Dahlen fosters a manufacturing type environment. This position will primarily involve operating a computer at a desk in an office environment and also visiting the shop floor as needed. Moderately heavy work requiring the occasional lifting of objects weighing 50 pounds or less.
