Completion of vocational school in carpentry and 3 years of journeyman experience. Journey level work experience may substitute for education on a year for year basis.

This position requires a valid driver's license.

About the Job
***THIS IS A TEAMSTER BARGAINING UNIT POSITION***

  • This Maintenance Carpenter position works primarily on keying and door hardware, but will also work performing general carpentry duties. 
  • Performs key shop duties such as installing, inspecting, repairing, maintaining, adjusting, opening and re-keying locks (of all types), related hardware and similar elements of office and public facilities.
  • Fabricates keys by duplicating or cutting new keys by codes for UMD personnel as requested through the electronic system.
  • Maintains master key files and records of keys distributed through the electronic system.
  • Inspects and performs preventative maintenance on building access hardware and equipment.
  • Installs, programs, tests, and maintains card access systems.  Documents any programming changes. 
  • Responds to emergency requests for access and lock repairs.  Evening, weekend and holiday overtime will be required when callouts occur.
  • Accurately enters time, materials and other job related data into the billing and work order system.
  • Works closely with customers to establish and maintain key security systems. Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit’s service to its customers by offering suggestions and participating as an active member of a work team.
  • Consults with end users, providing training for both new and existing systems.
  • Interfaces with contractors to ensure correct installation of devices.
  • Maintains and services locksmith and hand/power tools and equipment needed for work assignments.
  • Maintains inventory of frequently used materials, supplies and parts. 
  • Documents maintenance, repairs, field changes and usage of parts through appropriate procedures and work performed.
  • Perform general carpentry work (both rough and finish) involved in construction of wooden building frames, steel studs, sheetrock, and related accessories.
  • Inspects and makes necessary repairs to doors, windows, floors, ceilings, cabinets, stairs, etc.
  • Install and repair toilet stalls and bathroom accessories.
  • Perform preventative maintenance as directed.
  • Ability to read and follow blue prints, floor plans, specifications, written orders and manuals for installation and repair projects.
  • Must have computer knowledge and skills to operate electronic access systems.
  • Ability to independently inspect, recognize and repair identified problems.
  • Complete work in a timely fashion, keeping supervisor informed of progress or delays.
  • Demonstrate courteous and cooperative behavior to all customers, co-workers and other members of the campus community.
  • Represent Facilities Management and the University in a positive way by maintaining a professional and neat appearance.
  • Know and follow safety procedures and policies in everyday work and use protective equipment as required.
  • Participate in team meetings and decisions within the work unit.
  • Attend required training sessions.
  • Ability to stay motivated and work independently throughout campus.
  • Exhibits strong communication skills, to assure clear, consistent communication with co-workers, customers, and other members of the campus community.
  • Understanding of centrally controlled access systems.
  • A working knowledge of related building trades and work division between trades.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of locksmith tools, materials, procedures and principles.
  • High level of accuracy and efficiency.  Attention to detail.
  • A valid Drivers’ License, fingerprinting and a background check are required for this position.
     

Work Schedule: Maintenance Carpenters work Monday - Friday, 7:00am - 3:30pm. Must have the ability to be called during nights, holiday or weekends for emergency callouts.

Maintenance Carpenters start at $22.00 per hour.
