ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

??? Corrective and Preventive Maintenance through painting and coating of equipment, facilities and structural materials.
??? Complete assigned work orders and preventative maintenance work orders.
??? Take directions and perform tasks accurately and with quality.
??? Successful completion of required training curriculum.
??? Provides direction and expertise to others in the department.
??? Work independently and with a team under various conditions and locations
??? Able to work with outside painting / floor coating contractors in getting bids for service or technical advice.
??? Able to coordinate and manage the work of outside contractors as necessary.
??? Stay current on new developments in the coating industry

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

Education:
High School Diploma and a Trade School degree or equivalent experience.

Experience:
Minimum of 2 years of related painting and/or coatings experience.

Knowledge and Skills:

Must demonstrate at least 10 of the following general technical skills:
1. Ability to read, understand, and follow work instructions and operating procedures
2. Ability to write clear, thorough work instructions and operating procedures
3. Understanding of Sigma-Aldrich Hotwork permits, procedure and know how it applies
4. Ability to use basic PC software (Windows, Word, Excel, email)
5. Ability to safely operate a forklift
6. Ability to safely operate a scissors lift, boom lift, pallet jack, use scaffolding and ladders
7. Ability to read and understand all types of drawings/schematics
8. Able to operate hand tools, power tools, and basic electric and engine driven tools (sand blaster, power washer and sprayer, etc.)
9. Able to read and understand mixing instructions and units of measure
10. Able to read and understand MSDS's for approved materials, paints and coatings
11. Ability to identify materials, paints/coatings, and tools needed for a repair
12. Excellent decision making and problem solving skills: analyzing alternatives, evaluating risks, reviewing sequence of events
13. Ability to use precision measuring and mixing equipment
14. Understanding of proper materials of construction and painting
15. Able to don, doff and provide proper care and maintenance for Personal Protective Equipment
16. Ability to use levels, squares and or laser levels to assist in jobs

Must demonstrate at least 15 of the following specific technical skills:

Surface Preparation Related
1. Able to remove rust, mildew, mold or foreign materials from surfaces
2. Able to remove the foreign materials with either power tools, chemicals or by hand sanding
3. Able to mask or cover adjacent surfaces to reduce excessive clean up
4. Able to patch small and large holes by using tape, mesh, drywall compound and sanding techniques to form a smooth unnoticeable drywall repair.
5. Able to prepare floor surfaces with the use of materials, grinder, or shot blaster.
6. Able to remove and install wall coverings.
7. Able to identify potential lead coatings and report to EH&S for testing.

Coating Applications Related
8. Able to effectively apply coatings with brush, roller or spray equipment.
9. Able to match proper components to spray equipment for spraying.
10. Able to properly mix each coating according to manufacturers instructions.
11. Able to minimize putting coatings on surfaces not to be painted.
12. Able to apply proper coatings effectively to various interior and exterior structural materials.
13. Able to apply proper coatings effectively to interior and exterior floor surfaces.
14. Able to match various coatings with color scheme chart
15. Able to properly use and apply caulk to surfaces
16. Able to apply coatings in the form of design and verbage.
17. Ability to identify and diagnose problems associated with applications and take corrective actions.
18. Ability to clean and perform normal service to painting equipment when complete (sprayers, pumps, etc.)

Ordering and Transporting supplies Related
19. Ability to maintain a minimum inventory of standard paints and supplies.
20. Ability to measure and calculate quantities of materials based on the job/task.
21. Ability to properly transport equipment and supplies between sites or projects.
22. Ability to complete all required documentations using Good Documentation Practices.

Flammable paints and monitoring
23. Properly test atmosphere with explosion meter before and during painting and coatings applications.

Documentation and dispense of waste
24. Able to complete project estimate forms after each project.
25. Ability to properly pack and document any waste stream.
26. Able to turn in completed documentation in a timely manner.
27. Able to return excess materials to inventory.

Organizing work area and restore areas or items to usable condition
28. Dispose of trash properly each day.
29. Ability to keep paint carts and equipment storage area organized.
30. Return all items to their original position after painting is complete.
31. Ability to properly remove and install new cove base if necessary after a task is complete.
32. Ability to properly hang wall fixtures, dispensers, etc. that had to be removed to complete the task.
33. Ability to select and recommend proper wall mounting materials based on the weight of the item or items.

ADDITIONAL LOCAL NEEDS:

Environmental Conditions:
Facility Services Environment: Regularly works near moving mechanical parts, outdoor weather conditions, sources of electrical shock, vibrations, fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals for which protective equipment and procedures must be used. The workplace noise level is loud, occasionally very loud. Occasionally works in high, precarious places. Must have valid driver's license. Performs work related travel.

Physical Requirements:
If performing facility services duties: Ability to walk long distances and be able to stay on your feet for eight hours. the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, reach above the shoulder, stoop, kneel, twist, crouch or crawl for long periods of time. Use hands and feet to operate equipment. Occasionally lift 50 pounds unassisted and additional weight with assistance. Specific vision requirements of this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee may be required to wear a hard hat, safety shoes, eye protection, hearing protection, protective gloves, respirator and face shield (when required).
