General Manager/Grower

Breckendale Flower Farm in Breckenridge, MN

Salaried position with benefits.

Objective: To grow and maintain top quality plants to supply our retail outlet. To plan, organize, direct and coordinate activities of the greenhouse staff. Manage and direct the maintenance and repair of the facilities, equipment, and grounds in accordance with the highest standard of functionality, safety and aesthetics. In addition, oversee various aspects of employment, such as compliance with labor law and employee standards including aspects of recruitment and dismissal.

Requirements:

Positive attitude, strong communication skills, attention to detail and accuracy. Ability to work independently and stay on task. Punctuality and consistency with schedule obligations. This is a year-round salary position that requires varying hours depending on time of season. The spring/summer growing season can be up to 80 hours/week. The late summer/fall months will
require up to 50 hours/week and the winter months will require up to 20 hours/week. Flexibility in scheduling and weekend availability required.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Leadership
* Ability to organize, plan and prioritize work.
* Demonstrate tasks and duties to Greenhouse Team
* Oversee recruitment, onboarding, and dismissal
* Develop safety policies and procedures
* Provide training on safety policies and procedures

Production
* Oversee all aspects of annual crop culture and growing procedures
* Execute all cultural procedures including fertilization, IPM, PGR applications
* Weed and algae control
* Receiving and shipping
* Maintain clean and tidy work areas

Facilities
* Facilities maintenance
* Propose yearly facilities budget for general maintenance and improvements
* Water system (assembly in the spring and disassembly in fall)
* Grounds - mowing, weed control and algae, raking, snow removal, clean-up
* Vehicles maintenance - oil changes, repair
* Greenhouse poly removal and installation
* Vent and fan maintenance
* Lights
* Coordinate truck deliveries of plant, supplies, and hard goods

Administrative Tasks
* Accounting
* Accounts receivable, accounts payable
* Payroll
* Employee schedule
* Oversee aspects of human resources

Customer Service
* Operate Breckendale's retail store May - June or TBD
* Give consistent and correct answers
* Answer plant questions related to identification, care, and availability
* Answer retail chemical application questions
* Assign retail duties such as phones, cash register, writing orders and carry-out
* Assign other store duties such as cleaning projects, pricing, painting etc.
* All other duties as assigned or needed

Knowledge and Skills:
This position requires a High School Diploma and a Degree in Horticulture or similar Bachelor's degree or a combination of advanced education in horticulture and years of experience. This is a physical job that requires you to be on your feet for the duration of your shift. Must have the ability to perform physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as lifting, bending, reaching, walking, pushing and pulling carts and handling and sorting of materials. Must be able to lift 10-20 lbs. repetitively. Must be able to tolerate hot and humid conditions in the greenhouse and various weather conditions outside. Must hydrate as needed.
