Position Information

The Cataloging & Metadata Librarian performs original cataloging and advanced copy cataloging in all formats. This position is responsible for regularly updating content in the Library's integrated library system and discovery system.

Is directly accountable and responsible to the Director of Library Services.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Responsible for performing within national standards, original and advanced copy cataloging of library materials in all formats, including description and subject analysis.
  1. Responsible for participating in the assessment of the collection and building and maintenance of the Library's subject authority files.
  1. Responsible for managing bibliographic control of catalog and special projects.
  1. Responsible for participating in the establishment of cataloging policies and writing documentation of procedures. Serves as resource to all library staff regarding cataloging issues.
  1. Responsible for maintaining the library's automation systems, including OCLC and the library's integrated library and discovery systems.
  1. Responsible for working collaboratively with library staff on the library's integrated system issues and other search and discovery tools. Maintains a commitment to service and quality with the library as part of ODIN's catalog network.

Position Description & Details

DUTIES:

Technical Services - 35%
  1. Catalogs library materials according to the accepted academic library standards.
  1. Develops, evaluates and streamlines technical services policies and procedures.
  1. Maintains ODIN standards and policies.
  1. Maintains OCLC standards and policies.
  1. Adds, withdraws, and transfers library materials.
  1. Processes claims for late serial issues.
  1. Notifies campus community of new library materials.

Library systems - 25%
  1. Oversees library systems, including the integrated library system, the library's discovery system, and OCLC, by updating configurations, software and hardware; serves as contact for library systems offices and campus information services; trains staff; and generates reports and statistics.
  1. Activates newly acquired online resources and evaluates off-campus access to library online resources.
  1. Analyzes existing systems and recommends and implements modifications as appropriate.
  1. Investigates new and emerging applications and analyzes their applicability for the library.

Reference and Public Service - 20%
  1. Assists with providing reference, research, and circulation services to students, faculty, staff, and other library users in person, electronically, and by telephone.

General library support duties - 10%
  1. Maintains the local authority file.
  1. Conducts and supervises regular inventories of the library collections.
  1. Assists with collection development, compiles reports, and assists with deselection of library materials.
  1. Assists with delegated tasks associated with serials and interlibrary loan.
  1. Assists with development and maintenance of library web site and LibGuides.

Miscellaneous duties -- 10%
  1. Supports innovation, creativity and ideas to improve/enhance processes, functions, etc. in the department and as a whole for the college.
  2. Serves on appropriate committees.
  3. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Competencies

  • Master's degree from an ALA-accredited program.
  • Knowledge of general cataloging forms, processes and techniques; knowledge of library computer systems, familiarity with basic cataloging standards and tools, specifically MARC bibliographic records, LC classification, RDA, LC rule interpretations, and LC subject heading practice.
  • Proficient in working knowledge of computer software programs i.e., Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, etc.), email and electronic calendar, and excellent keyboarding skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a team member.
  • Ability to work effectively with all levels of patrons and colleagues.
  • Strong interpersonal, written and oral communication skills, aptitude for accuracy and detail, and strong commitment to public service.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and use appropriate judgment in handling information and records.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Recent professional experience in cataloging and database maintenance in an academic library setting.
  • Experience working with OCLC.
