The Vice President of Education will provide overall strategic direction for NAZ's education strategies. This position will report to the Chief Operating Officer and will be part of the Organizational Leadership Team which consists of Directors and above. This position will ensure that NAZ's K - 12 education strategies are designed to achieve NAZ's long-term goal that "all scholars graduate from high school, college and career ready" and support NAZ's mission of creating a culture of achievement in North Minneapolis. The Vice President of Education will supervise the Director of Education Partnerships, Director of Family Achievement, and the Director of Community Wellness.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Education Strategy Leadership: Design and oversee the development and implementation of NAZ's K-12 education strategies--supporting the development and implementation of evidence-based, gap-closing best practices and strategies proven to successfully promote the academic achievement of Black scholars in our community.
  • Collaborative Engagement: Lead a collaborative engagement process to determine the most effective use of NAZ resources in impacting the educational outcomes of North Minneapolis youth--especially low-income African American families. Develop and lead effective partnerships with exceptional, high-performing schools, Expanded Learning organizations, colleges and systems that provide high-quality, world-class opportunities for NAZ scholars.
  • Best Practices: Survey both the local and national landscape to identify effective educational practices and approaches designed for accelerating the success of students of color (especially under-resourced African American scholars) in alignment with the NAZ mission.
  • Family Achievement Program: Provide oversight and leadership support for the Family Achievement Program. Directly supervise the Family Achievement Program Director and support the strong alignment of the Family Achievement coaches with NAZ's educational goals and commitment to partner with parents to create a culture of achievement in North Minneapolis.
  • Community Wellness Program: Provide oversight and leadership support for the Community Wellness Program especially as it seeks to deeply embed trauma-responsive and racially equitable practices across NAZ partner schools, early childhood and expanded learning partners.
  • Public Policy and Advocacy: Engage in advocacy efforts designed to change public policies that prevent children of color--especially low-income African American children--from having access to a world-class education.
  • Education Allies: Serve as NAZ's point of contact for work with other organizations and coalitions committed to educational equity for Northside scholars.
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned.

Supervision Responsibility

Director of Education Partnerships, Director of Family Achievement, Director of Community Wellness in support of the design and implementation of strategies and programs that are aligned with NAZ's education goals.

Internal Relationships

Organizational Leadership Team (Directors positions and above across the organization), Family Achievement and Community Wellness Teams, NAZ Data Team, and Impact Committee of the Board.

External Relationships

NAZ anchor schools, allied education partners and programs, and program partners including the NAZ Executive Leadership Team (composed of CEOs and Executive Directors of partner organizations).

Minimum Qualifications

The ideal candidate must have experience and knowledge of the K - 12 education landscape as an experienced educator, with direct experience leading and supporting positive educational outcomes for students of color--especially African American students. The preferred candidate will also have a knowledge of trauma-responsive approaches. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a deep commitment to racial equity in education--especially for under-resourced Black and Brown children--and a knowledge of effective practices in providing high-quality educational opportunities for these scholars to meet and exceed their unlimited potential. A strong passion for NAZ's mission and Values (F.A.C.T.s) to "build a culture of achievement in North Minneapolis to ensure that all youth graduate from high school college and career-ready," is a must. Other qualifications and skills required or preferred for this position include:

  • Master's degree in education, or a closely related field, required.
  • 8 or more years of progressively responsible leadership experience in education.
  • Knowledge of innovative approaches to educating African American students resulting in excellent outcomes.
  • Knowledge of education policy and advocacy on behalf of under-resourced students of color.
  • Experience leading and developing education programs in- and out-of-school settings.
  • Knowledge of behavioral and mental health needs of scholars and staff in educational settings using a trauma-responsive lens.
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills, both orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, growth-minded organization.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Work is normally performed in an office work environment but may occasionally include lifting and bending.
  • Regular operation of normal office machines (computer, copier, and fax), is required.
  • Occasional evening and weekends work required.
  • Limited travel may be required.
