Overview

Full-time, benefited position working 80 hours per two-week payperiod. Days of work are Monday - Friday and hours are 8:00 am-4:30 pm.

To assist patients with non or under insured plans for services to find appropriate programs or insurance, assists Patient Access Team with registration and authorization.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a thorough understanding and working knowledge of all public and private health insurance programs that provide assistance to the uninsured and underinsured. Assist uninsured and underinsured individuals in applying for available health insurance or prescription assistance and track delivery of care.
  • Review upcoming schedules to determine private pay patients. Make personal contact either in the pre-registration process, at time of appointment or during patient stay. Interacts with patients in the adolescent, adult and geriatric age groups while performing duties.
  • Perform screening activities to assist self-pay in-house patients and discharged self-pay patients.
  • Review prior day or weekend Ed visits for eligibility and correct accounts prior to bill dropping.
  • Confirm eligibility and initiate authorization for same day add-ons.
  • Review all self pay accounts for the next 30 days.
  • Review assigned workques.
  • Assist manager with high priority projects.
  • Completes estimates for potential patient procedures.
  • Oversees the procedure of return mail in the patient access area.
  • Submit Medicaid, Community Care or other sponsorship applications.
  • Follows up on problems that may arise with guarantor discrepancies, etc.
  • Monitors miscellaneous accounts.
  • When required, will be assigned to work in various admission areas; interviews patients, gathering information including but not limited to demographic data, insurance information and emergency notification, and obtains appropriate signatures. Functions as the telephone switchboard when required. Assists in the scheduling of patient for the clinic and rehab departments.
  • Completes insurance Specialist roles when position is absent.
  • Position is split between Financial Counseling and Insurance Verification/Specialist. The purpose of this position is to have 60% roles or focus to be on Financial Counseling with working self pays prior to service and discharge. 40% is to be focusing on insurance verification in the primary area of Emergency Department and OB accounts, as this the highest level of uninsured accounts.
  • Will be the backup for patient access insurance specialist roles.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.


Qualifications

Requires associate degree or completion of high school education and 2 or more years of collection experience. Minimum typing speed 50 wpm required.

Two or more years of collection or clerical experience depending on education which demonstrates progressively more responsible required; three months on-the-job training.
