Position Description & Details:

The Department of Pharmacy Practice at North Dakota State University School of Pharmacy is seeking a qualified individual for a full-time, 12-month, non-tenure track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor of Practice. The individual also will serve as a clinical pharmacist in acute care services integrated into Essentia Health Pharmacy in Fargo, ND. The practice will include generalist clinical pharmacist practice on a medical surgical service with opportunity to focus in other acute care areas (ie. Emergency Department, pediatrics, critical care, oncology), depending on availability and interest. Individuals with pharmacy residency training and/or experience in interprofessional collaboration in the provision of acute care services as well as experience with the role of the pharmacist within healthcare systems are of particular interest.

The individual will be teaching within the Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) didactic curriculum in a pharmacotherapy capstone course and other pharmacotherapy courses with emphasis on acute care practice. Other teaching may include pathophysiology, immunization and interprofessional education. Additionally, the individual is expected to perform research/scholarship, as well as service to the School/College/University and provide clinical pharmacy services, and precept Pharm.D. students during Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences and pharmacy residents at Essentia Health, Fargo.

Responsibilities:

Clinical Practice Responsibilities and Duties: All Essentia-related activities needs to be accomplished within 20 hours/week on the medical surgical floor and the cardiac intermediate care floor and might include the following:
  • Perform all standard clinical services offered by Pharmacy for all inpatients including ( This is the first year priority ):
  • Adult TPN dosing, Kinetics, IV-to-PO route adjustments, Renal and Hepatic dosing, DVT prophylaxis recommendations, Heparin and Lovenox dosing, Lovenox teaching, anticoagulation recommendations, ad hoc Med Rec clarifications, therapeutic substitution, duplicate medication clarifications, Argatroban dosing, Age based dosing, screening for medication interactions, identifying and reporting medication errors and ADRs, dosage form adjustments, IV compatibility screening, home medication verification, IV infiltration recommendations, Chemo therapy verification and monitoring, Pharmacy Help orders, answer all physician, nursing, patient, family medication related questions, assist with vaccine questions, assist with Tikosyn monitoring, Monitor labs ad hoc., Document I-vents and hand-offs, fill out appropriate monitoring forms
  • Attend codes ad hoc for patients if available and timing allows the attendance.
  • Verify and review medication orders
  • Transition of care services including admission med rec review, education, and discharge.
  • Attend rounds with team, as assigned
  • Provide antimicrobial stewardship interventions
  • Attend daily pharmacy huddles (10:45 am) to provide hand off communication to next shift ad hoc.
  • Help with inventory control of all medications to control cost and volume
  • Precept (primary preceptor) Acute Care APPE students ( This is the first year priority)
  • Precept (primary preceptor) 2 PGY1 acute care residents/year during their Acute Care II rotation ( This is the second year priority
  • Participate in research projects, Medication Use Evaluation (MUEs), and Publications to meet mutually beneficial goals for faculty, Essentia Health and NDSU Department of Pharmacy Practice ( This is the second year priority )


  • Teaching (18 workload credits):
    • Academic/Co-curriculum advising: 10 students
    • APPE rotations/year (type: TBD): 7 rotations (7-14 students)
    • Possible didactic teaching Fall semester:
      • PHRM 565: Immunization
      • PHRM 340: Pathophysiology of Disease
      • PHRM 540: Public Health (Poster mentor)
    • Possible didactic teaching Spring semester:
      • PHRM 341: Pathophysiology of Disease
      • PHRM 580 (Capstone): Teaching select acute care topics
      • CHP 400: Interprofessional Healthcare Practice (or other Interprofessional Educational projects/activities throughout the PharmD curriculum/co-curriculum)
      • Coverage of select topics in pharmacotherapy or pharmacotherapy lab course topics (based on needs/specialty as well as continued readjustment for tenure/non-tenure track faculty)
    • Other teaching (based on the curriculum need):
      • 1-2 weeks in the Concept Pharmacy (institutional) weekly activity lead
      • Other needs

    Advertised Salary:

    Commensurate with experience

    Minimum Qualifications:
    • Pharm.D. degree
    • Completed a PGY1 ASHP-accredited residency or have accumulated at least three years of recent and consistent experience in acute care clinical pharmacy practice
    • Eligible for pharmacist licensure in North Dakota
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills
    • Excellent leadership and collaboration skills
    • Demonstration of self-development

    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Completed or completing a PGY2 ASHP-accredited residency
    • Greater than 3 years of consistent experience in acute care/general medicine clinical pharmacy practice
    • Teaching experience in pharmacy or medical programs
    • Precepting experience in pharmacy or medical programs
    • Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) Board certification
    • Research/scholarship experience
    • Immunization certificate/immunization administration experience
