Description

The Aerospace Success Center function is to provide academic advisement, career planning and placement services to current students; to recruit new students and assist explaining in the admission and registration process, to evaluate transfer credits; to provide academic advising support to the faculty; to provide personal/social counseling; to provide services to aerospace students as needed or required.

The Academic Advisor position will provide academic advisement, recruitment, and retention services to undergraduate aerospace students at the University of North Dakota.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • General Aerospace Advising
    • Provide academic, degree program and career advising for current on campus and online undergraduate aerospace programs including knowledge of all degree requirements
    • Understand needs of various student populations with a primary focus on either online or international students.
    • Advise incoming aerospace students during the summer orientation program in coordination with UND’s Student Academic Success & Career Engagement.
    • Meet with students and be available for walk-ins at the Aerospace Success Center.
    • Participation in assessment of advising.
    • Understand and accurately communicate policies and procedures to advisees.
    • Respond to telephone and email inquiries regarding the aerospace programs and procedures.
    • Work in cooperation with UND’s Student Academic Success & Career Engagement and Admissions Office.
    • Assist in auditing students’ progress towards graduation.
    • Understand and accurately communicate resources available to students and refer to these services when needed.
  • Assist with new student recruitment within JDOSAS
    • Meet with prospective students and conduct the aerospace briefings both in person and virtually.
    • Take part in UND Aerospace Saturday admissions days, and other open houses throughout the year
    • Represent UND and the JDOSAS in various outreach events throughout the region
    • Work with transfer students to assist in receiving course equivalencies, when needed.
  • Use of appropriate technology tools for advising
    • Use of Campus Connection, College Scheduler, and Degree Map for effective advising.
    • Use of Starfish for effective scheduling and tracking of student success.
    • Understand student use of Blackboard and Handshake in order to advise.
    • Be familiar with functions of the Aviation Information Management System (AIMS).
    • Maintain student academic records through perceptive content, and utilize technology when appropriate.
  • Participation in student centered events and professional development
    • Participation in graduation ceremonies
    • On campus workshops for professional development
    • Participation in regional/national recruiting events.

Required Competencies

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong organization skills
  • Experience with group presentations.
  • Ability to connect with students for academic purposes and on a personal level.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Experience advising undergraduate students
  • Experience in an educational setting, preferably higher education working with students
  • Experience with personal computers and software including: Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook & Publisher.
  • Successful completion of criminal history records check.

  • Experience with use of advising tools (e.g., campus connection, starfish)
  • Experience with UND policies and procedures.
  • Experience with Campus Connection, College Scheduler, Starfish, and the Degree Map.
  • Experience advising students in online programs
  • Experience working with international students

Minimum Hiring Salary/Position Classification

$42,000+/year, full-time, benefited, exempt
