The Phoenix Company is a rapidly growing 128-year-old company based out of Milwaukee, WI that specializes in the design and manufacture of durable LED lighting for a variety of rugged industrial markets around the globe.

We are seeking a tenacious and creative Hardware Design Engineer to design and develop electronic controls and systems used in general lighting applications. S(he) will be our in-house electrical expert for solid-state lighting (SSL) electronic components used in various luminaire product designs and will oversee electrical validation testing and agency compliance for the new product development process. The Hardware Design Engineer will work onsite in our facility in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Hardware Design Engineer Responsibilities:

  • Perform electrical circuit design, simulation and analysis of electronic circuits, PCB layout, system test and validation to meet technical product and safety requirements.
  • Design and develop microprocessor-based embedded controls systems and RF/wireless control devices.
  • Lead design from concept to production including capturing product requirements, component selections, simulation test, prototype build, validation test, agency approvals, production integration and technical troubleshooting.
  • Coordinate with software teams on design, development, device bring-up and hardware verification.
  • Select and approve most reliable and cost-effective electrical SSL components to be incorporated into luminaire design - including LED lighting engines, drivers, LED modules. Validate electrical requirements.
  • Participate in design and verification efforts, including compliance/standards testing and system compatibility.
  • Engage in all phase of new product development and improving/sustaining activities for existing and installed base products.
  • Participate in design reviews and support luminaire product development effort. Work with luminaire design teams to SSL components and validate electrical requirements.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related discipline.
  • 5+ years of relevant work experience in hardware design and new product development. Recent experience in the lighting industry preferred.
  • Capable of creating embedded system design, including block diagram, design schematics, component selection, simulation, analysis, and verification.
  • Experience in power electronics and both switched and linear power supply topology.
  • Experience in RF/wireless controls design, wireless communication protocols and hardware interface.
  • Proficiency in using hardware design validation lab equipment such as oscilloscope, signal generator, spectrum analyzer, function generator, DMM and DC power supplies.
  • Able to interface with diagnostic and communication systems and software tools.
  • Hands-on experience of product testing for EMC/EMI compliance.
  • Familiar with safety test standards and agency compliance, such as UL, CE, ETL, FCC, etc.
  • Experience in design of mixed signal circuits (analog and digital), and power circuits used in general lighting and controls applications.
